Voice over LAN?

Howdy all,

I have a question for you. I am in the service and we live in a barracks. I have been LAN'ing with a good friend of mine recently and for a while he was just moving his laptop back and forth from my room to his. I made a long LAN cable yesterday so he wouldn't have to do this anymore. Unfortunately, I underestimated how important it was to be able to talk to him while playing (think Ghost Recon Co-op) I was thinking of getting two USB headsets to solve this problem, but I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any software that I would need to be able to talk back and forth with him. It would have to run in the background so I could still play the game and not take over the sound completely. Any help you all could provide would be most appreciated. Thanks.

LCpl Tomlin,

I'll second TeamSpeak.

We just started using it, and it's installed on a machine my bro-in-law uses for gaming, no lag or side affects at all. His machine specs are same as yours.

Try Ventrilo, Its really clear and a team will sponsor you a channel, Best team communication program available.

There is nothing more true than this statement here.

Ventrilo 2.2 requires you to pay for more then 8 slots, and you need someone to run a server for you, It is good, but besides having to run a server on a different computer and the stupid slot limitation, I think it's the best out there.

You can try to find Ventrilo 2.1.3 or lower and it will get rid of the slot limit. But you would need to find the Ventrilo 2.1.3 Server Exe as well.

Ditto. Ventrilo's great but the red-tape's a pain in the backside.

Thanks for the help guys. I got both Teamspeak and Ventrilo and have gone with Ventrilo because both the server and client are free. I am going to buy some USB headsets today. Thanks again!
