Hey everybody,

I heard from a friend a couple years ago that there was an article in Wired about a guy who wired up his room with omni directional mics hooked into voice activation software, something a la Star Trek. I just finished my first build last weekend and obviously I want to push my geekdom further, so can anyone point me in the right direction in terms of which software to use? I just had simple things in mind.

It's not necessary, probably wont help much, but I think it would be a pretty neat side project to keep me going now that my new rig is built.
 
Pretty sure Vista has speech recognition built-in.

I used a program from IBM Waaaaay back in the day, I think in win98, that worked pretty well. Was fun to play with, not hugely practical. Just google it.
 
I'd like to stick to XP with this one; I'd rather wait and see what Windows 7 has to offer.
 
Just played with Vista voice recognition for the first time yesterday. I was impressed but would still like two things. Something with more intelligence so I don't have to remember a list of commands. I only know a few for my dog and he can usually still figure out virtually everything I say. I would like the option for it to talk back instead of written prompts or questions. I only just messed with so maybe there is an option for voice responses.
 
I was just wondering if there were any other possibilities other than installing Vista; because reinstalling my OS just to get voice command functionality seems a little overboard. Also it would probably be less fun and more headaches.
 
For a while there, there were three or four names in the category. I'm not sure if IBM's Via Voice is still in development, but Naturally Speaking is still out there. I think Nuance, the same company that also absorbed ScanSoft picked Dragon (developer of Naturally Speaking) up too. You can search on "voice recognition software" or " speech recognition software" using your fave search engine and you'll find what's out there. I also found a free download called e-Speaking.

I'm a big fan of Dragon NatruallySpeaking. I've been using it since version 9 came out and couldn't be more satisfied (not affiliated with them, just a happy customer). It is very accurate, though I've had some trouble with homonyms. The biggest complaint I have is that it slows down my PC noticeably (though I have a wimpy PC, so that probably won't be a problem for you.)

I did do some poking around on my own, but I wanted to get the opinion of people here without influencing with my own opinion. I trust people at [H] a whole lot more than some random hit on a search engine :)
