VMWare Workstation 7 is finished...

fuck me! I gotta get to updating. That HL2 pic in a VM is awesomesauce! I should really test their assertion of Direct3D acceleration in a VM, one of these days, see just how far I can push it!
 
So did anyone play a game in it yet? How are the frame rates compared to your physical box? I haven't the time to try to get one installed in a VM, these days.
 
WS6.5 supported Shader Model 2.0 and OpenGL 2.0. WS7 adds SM 3.0 and OGL 2.1. On 6.5, WoW performance was a little slower in a VM, but still performed very well. It's been a while so I don't really remember the details, just that it was a little slower than native.
 
I am going to have to try out the acceleration in a Win7 VM under Fusion3 (I know, I know...not really what this thread is about, but they were released in the same week) and see how she runs. Windows games on my MacBook without having to run BootCamp would be sweet. I'm not sure I can see the use for Workstation VM Gaming, though, given that you're going to run it on Linux or Windows, both of which (either run natively, or have supporting libraries already) run plenty of games.

Someone care to show me the light on this one, and tell me why I would game inside of a VM? I can think of only one reason: You main OS is a server OS, but there's a graphics accelerator installed. However, in that case, I would run the gaming OS as the primary, and virtualize the server OS.

So, what is it that I'm missing? And no, I'm not knocking the feature, or the capability, at all. I'm curious as to the usage scenario.
 
well there are some games that are not supported in certain platforms (windows only), can now be played on a Linux machine with a Windows VM
 
okay, so i can see the linux host os running a windows vm as a guest, which has games. what about windows host running windows guest with games? i guess... older versions of windows as the guest? you can only go so far back (on windows versions, for guests) before it would be better to just run a retro box (as far as performance is concerned)
 
I think it's probably more to bridge any existing compatibility issues. The main concern would be separation from the host OS, I suppose.

Something I have done before was run several VMs with a game in each so I could effectively multi-box (hello Diablo II). Dedicated servers I have not tried yet. I am curious to know how well that works out. But otherwise yeah, I take the route where I run servers as a VM and game natively. Any time I run a VM is to separate it from the host OS to prevent window focus problems or otherwise.

I would think you could get away with some less-than-moral things, manipulating the VM and its memory from the host OS? I haven't tried, and my understanding of low-level memory handling and protection for VMware ESX or Workstation (or other Hosted products) is weak.
