I'm purchasing 3 servers to use with VMWare (vCenter Std, the works) and will probably expand to 4 servers by the end of the year. Dual Quad-Core Xeon's, 36GB ram each.

What I am trying to find out is storage wise whether I absolutely need a SAN to take advantage of vMotion, FT, HA etc. Can I use the local storage purchased with the servers and still use these features? Or is is SAN/NAS dependant?

In order for vmotion and HA to work all the server must share the same storage. So you would need a central storage area such as SAN/NAS


(if i'm wrong, please correct me)
 
Correct. You WILL have sVmotion, but that will be of limited use with non-shared storage.
 
Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I don't think it will be too big a deal to pick up a SAN/NAS. I thought I read it before but I come from pre-VMotion era - thought maybe it wasn't needed and that it was convienent just to have.
 
Quite a few affordable ones out there -go with something common though :)
