VMware to HyperV Conversion issues.

Had a physical machine running Server2008R2

Used VMWare's converter to get it to a VM. Then used the Vmdk2Vhd to conver the VMWare HD to a HyperV HD.

I've done this 3 other times with no problem. This time after conversion to HyperV the VM is completely unresponsive about 10 seconds after login. RAM useage goes through the roof on the VM.

VM originally runs in VMWare perfectly fine.

Staying with VMWare is not an option before any of those suggestions start.

Any ideas?
 
interesting that you are using a vmware tool to get to a hyper-v solution. Microsoft doesn't offer a P2V converter?
 
not that im aware of, if they had one id like t know about it though.
 
Now that I compare the prior 3 times I've done this; they were all Physical Intel machines going to an Intel VM host.

This time the Physical machine was AMD. Should I have syspreped? Would this have mattered if the VMWare image is running fine?

Should I try to sysprep it while in the VMWare image, then convert the HD over to hyper v again? I'm making a copy of the VMWare HD now.
 
Damn, that was developed recently. I didnt know anything about it. I'll try that next time I have to do this.

Unfortuately the physical machine no longer exists. I only have VMWare HD's now.
 
You're migrating from VMware to Hyper-V. That's your problem. :)

Out of curiosity, why is VMware not an option?

You can run disk2vhd in a vm too. It will work as long as the Vmware machine works good.

It worked! Thank you so much. I was completely unaware of that tool. Had to make sure to also conver the 100mb partition that MS puts in there for bitlocker AND the converted virtual HD has to be connected as IDE, not SCSI.

After i RTFM everything worked great. Thanks again!

The vmware converter last time I tried it anyway doesn't know what to do with that 100mb partition.


I used Disk2VHD to convert a couple Windows Server 2008 R2 servers to Hyper-V and then Migrated to VMware. Convoluted but it works.
