so i want to set up once and for all my smp clients without problems, so i plan to run a linux distro inside a VM, so which would be better VMware Server or Virtual Box, i know VMware Server would be a very solid option, at the price of having 4 services running 24/7, in the other hand i have Virtual Box, light and not a resource hog. which one should i go :confused:
 
I've been using VMWare Server v1-0-6, they give out free keys for it too, so there's no cost. It's been running pretty well for me, and it's VERY easy to use. I've never tried Virtual Box, so I can't say which is better, I just know I've enjoyed VMWare Server
 
Yes, go with VMWare server since it's what most of us is very good at. It's also very robust and troublefree.

 
+1 for VM server. No experience with Virtual box, sorry but I did try out VM workstation
for about 1 month. Had nothing but problems. Thankfully the kind folk here at [H] forums
pointed me to VM Server and now I have no lockups, freezes, 1 core dropping out, wierd
EUE errors etc. Just lean mean ppd producing machines. :p


 
I have only used VMWare Server myself. It does the job it needs to do. Obviously, no experience with Virtual Box but I thought I read somewhere that it's nowhere near as efficient as VMWare and may not take advantage of the virtualization extensions that some of the AMD and Intel duals and quads have. Without support of those extensions, the virtual machine will run a lot slower.

As I said, I think I just read that somewhere and it may not be true. I'm just too lazy to actually look it up since VMWare Server works well.

One more thing, I have very little experience with VMWare Server in Windows. I think I've used it once and the rest of my experience with it is under Linux and it works great there. Unfortunately, I have to re-run the script for it every time I update to a new kernel but that's actually rather painless and only takes a couple of minutes at the most.

 
Again no experience with Virtual Box.

I've run the Windoze version of VMWare Server 1.0.4 since November with no problems.
Haven't upgraded since it means redoing the disk image which is a pita.
But I'm running them on XP Pro.

I dont know if the latest version has signed drivers for Vista.
If not you need to boot into unsigned driver mode every time.
Hit "F8" at post to get the correct menu.

No real tricks to install VMWare Server. Just download the 1.0.6 from http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ (don't forget to register to get a free serial number) then install it like any other software (enter the serial number when asked). After this is done, just open it and select local host.

As to install a OS in it, just create a new virtual machine, configure it the way you want (select other linux 64 bits, make a 20 GB disk (don't tick allocate the space now) and put 1024 MB of ram). When it's done, start it and it will act like a virtual pc so the OS installation is the same as with a physical box.
