I've got an old win2k3 server hosting IIS for some external websites at a data center out of state. I'm trying to figure out the best way to P2V the server in order to move it to an alternate data center and minimize downtime. I don't have any additional storage at the data center at this time. Is it possible to P2V the server while its running onto a USB hard drive or something and then ship it to an alternate data center to bring up in an alternate ESXI host? I figure most of you have done stuff like this before so I was just looking for some ideas & warnings to avoid issues. :)
 
Yes you can convert a machine while its running. Are you running DC roles on it? (then there could be problems)

Use VMWare converter to dump it to a usb. Sometimes I need to do P to workstation and then again workstation to esxi. You can do directly to another host as well. to USB is much quicker tho.
 
The latest VMware Workstation will allow you to convert to Workstation then transfer to ESXi. Use that if you can. Free VMware converter will allow you to convert from physical to Workstation then to ESXi as well.

If your physical server is acting as a DC or running some kind of databases it's recommended to shut those services down before doing a live P2V.
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys. As far as I'm aware (haven't got login rights yet) the server is just hosting web services. No DC roles that I'm aware of.

Yeah then you should be able to convert it easily, just do a customize and make sure your scsii is LSI.
