I am extremely interested in VMware NSX and SDN but what I would like to know is does anyone have any solid experience with using it in production? I'm not talking about a slice of its components but I am talking a full scale NSX SDN deployment, DLR, DFW, ESG, Controllers - the full works.

Questions:

1. How easy was it to design and migrate to, what did you use as an aid for the design piece because there is not a lot of material out there yet.

2. How stable is it and have you had any caveats?

3. Software API / SDK, are you using it? I see on the VMware Blogs the article around automating firewall rules based on un-authorized putty connection attempts, the options for this seem huge.

4. What are your overall thoughts on the product? the good and the bad and would you deploy it over again if you had the choice.

I can't help but think this is extremely exciting times for both network and virtualisation based careers, SDN is surely now ready to explode on the market with some serious uptake.

Anyway appreciate your thoughts and NetJunkie if you read this, thank you for the Pluralsight courses, extremely good - when will you be adding more? any more in the works? what is your experience with "production grade" NSX? would really appreciate your thoughts.

There are only about 400 production deployments world-wide (see: http://blogs.vmware.com/networkvirtualization/2015/05/journey-vmware-nsx-customers.html). NSX is currently priced in such a way that it makes little sense to buy it unless you can actually save hard dollars using it (which can't be done unless you are one of those ~400 customers).

NSX will have to be mainstream priced before more businesses may start to use it. The primary issue from where I am looking is that SDN solves a problem not many companies actually have.
 
From the little exposure I have to it, all in a lab or through online reading/classes... I just don't see how it would be a benefit for my company (or, in fact, any of the previous companies I worked for - some quite large). I understand the benefits it does offer - I just don't see it giving any kind of real ROI for us, specifically. It seems very targeted, as Thileman pointed out.
 
We had an in-depth walkthrough with VMware and their NSX team and they didn't even really try to sell it to us. Basically stating exactly what previous posters have said. They actually somewhat discouraged us at this time from investing in it. It's price point and current use case doesn't fit most companies, even fairly 'large' ones like us. It's features really are on point with the direction we are beginning to take, but I'd say we will be a few years off from looking to go the NSX route, if ever.
 
Unless you're programatically creating / destroying / controlling / modifying / consuming pre-designed network architectures, it's generally not worth the cost. Think big cloud, huge service provider, etc.

It's an epic and awesome product, but it's highly complex and designed to REALLY be consumed via the API, from a cloud provisioning engine of some kind.
