VMware not detecting external hard drive

I wanted to create a new virtual machine using VMware Player, but when I attempted to install the OS by selecting the ISO from my external hard drive the player could not detect it. I know I could just try installing the OS from an ISO on the internal hard drive, but this defeats the purpose of storing them on my external to save space even if I have plenty of it with an internal 1 TB drive, but that's beside the point. Even though it will allow me to install that way. I'm using VMware Workstation 12 Player version 12.0.0 build-2985596 and Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS as my host OS.
