VMware is bull?

He isn't saying VMware is bull, saying that the promise of VDI isn't delivering and in some ways I agree...but you can't base everything on the CapEx comparison to doing things the same old way. Anytime someone needs to see a hard cost savings in the first year or two for moving to VDI the conversation ends. You won't get it. The savings are in the OpEx side..and by adding features such as easier DR and better mobility.
 
People have been touting the "thin" client model which is now currently repackaged as VDI.

Thin clients are still useful in exactly the same environments they always have been. Well connected enviroments with fully predictable workloads and relatively limited numbers of applications.

VDI actually does add some really useful functionality for providing external providers with connectivity to internal resources in a very secure an managed manner where they can use their own hardware to display the interface of a machine with a full access to your infrastructure with only single port attack surface exposure that the old "thin" model didn't really encompass.


I think its really entertaining that he's presenting a "through your web browser model" as superior, when it has nearly the same set of limitations for just about everything except for hardware video acceleration. I've heard that argument every year going back to 1996. All apps will live in a broswer in a "year or 2". The desktop is dead, and everything else that gets repeated every year.

Yeah, its typically great for whatever the current app craze is, then suddenly when more bandwidth comes along, an app that wasn't possible before the increased bandwidth gets invented to use it all up and requires more processing power, even if only in bursts than previous types of apps which pushes a web version of that another couple of years into the future.

Even then, a lot of the lower cost device manufactures of thin devices (Kindle fire anyone) are moving to server based pre-processing for web browsing to increase browser performance so they can reduce device power demand for longer battery life by doing some of the work elsewhere.

Remote processing of your remote web app, gotta love it. the more IT changes, the more it stays the same. :)
 
My company uses VMware's VDI across its entire enterprise (1,500 machines). Every one of our engineers was skeptical when this idea was pitched to us though slowly we bought in and are happy to have gone with it. It makes provisioning and deploying a breeze. What normally took us weeks to bring a site online and offline now takes us minutes to hours. We're currently using zero client terminals for end-user connectivity. We have some users connecting in on their iPads as well when they have a need for an XP or 7 desktop. We have View Security servers on the DMZ of our network so users can just install the View Client on their home PC if they wish to work from home.

The dirty little secret about VDI though is proving its cost-effectiveness. It is a tough one to sell especially when you start realizing the WAN implications of deploying such a solution. In the long run though your biggest area of savings becomes soft costs.

VDI is here to stay and is the future.
 
I use VDI and so far in a 20 user environment, I can go for months without getting a phone call, it is very useful.
 
I run a small VDI deployment for my team. Works great - here's your desktop, have a nice day, patch once a month and golden. from time perspective, it's cut down my workload managing their access to our environment by 60+%.
 
VDI becomes more cost effective when you're looking at a fleet of ancient desktops.

We're able to reimage old desktops with a superlightweight XP install, it boots into the vmware view client and that's all it can do.

Users connect to their VDI desktops and work away. The costs of purchasing and deploying 100 desktops is far more than 1 server.
 
We have been wanting to move to VDI for some time now. How do you guys handle VDI on laptops when a user goes home? Especially if they go home and don't have an internet connection. We need users to still be able to work at home on their company laptops without requiring an internet connection back to our servers.

This is exactly what we did when we rolled out the first 200 on XP Embedded Wyse Terminals. I configured a VB script to launch on boot making View client the shell...so the user only saw a blue background with the View Client login ready to go.

Then we went Zero clients from Wyse, easier to manage. We are on 4.6 right now, it's gotten much better with every release. Can't wait to move to 5.x.

As for the question pertaining laptops, we haven't done this yet, but I believe you can setup view to login to the desktop without the connection server, then, when the next time they are on the network and can access the connection server it syncs the desktop.

The technology behind VDI is going to allow a multi-device environment which will essentially allow all types of users to access thier data..etc from any device. It's definately not going anywhere and I think it's just now starting to show it's worth now that the infrastructure behind it is at a point where you can deliver the same experience as a stand alone PC/Laptop.

I have not done it yet, I"m sjut ccurrently buying gear for my VDI pilot, but using view premier bundles, you can get offline desktops, you can save your VM to a local machine, and run it in vmware player, and re-sync it when you're back online.
 
From a cost point of view I can't say its really worth it for most places. We looked at going VDI and it just wasn't worth the price. Also printing is still a pain in the arse, its better than it used to be but its still not good enough.

We do use XenApp for some apps and the cost is just stupid at times.

What in particular about printing do you find difficult? My plan is to map printers via GPO, rint jobs all go to local print servers. Only thing I think I"m going to have soem trouble with is large print jobs (multi page PDFs) being printed from a branch office to their local printer, job must be sent from the datacenter to the remote print server, so a bit of lag there, but we're tlkaing ipsec VPN ebtween a 100Mb EDI and a 20Mb EDI, so hould be fairly snappy. Printers don't get used much at our office as well.
