vmware esxi console or view?

Hi..

I'm using ESXi now on my storage server. I just got started with it. Now I'm pretty happy with all the options, and i am carefully planning a new system for the hard work. Instead of buying a mac, i prefer to get some virtual machines which I can access on a simple laptop, or perhaps even iphone/ipad as controlling device. Saves me a lot of extra stuff to take with me. I also can enjoy the power of a heavy workstation anywhere I want.

So I got this idea. When using ESXi (free), I opened the console and can work from that VM. Now the problem here is that it does not deliver a good quality; say video. When the video is paused, like an image, the quality is fine, except when there's motion.

The ideal situation will be that I can access my VM i want (OSX for most stuff, but say win7/8 for 3dmax). The workstation will not contain an audiocard, but the audiocards will be external. As videocard, I will probably go for a simple one, with extension cards like the xeon phi or nvidia tesla. Ideally, the workstation will be also having the e5-2600v2 serie, dual proc.. aiming for 12 cores each proc.



I was wondering if working with VMware View will improve the videoquality ? or will it be the same as opening the console trough a VPN connection?

If yes, I might plan to buy it next year.
Since i will be having more machines, and with more than one processor, I was thinking of getting this license: VMware vSpehere Essential kit

License wise, view is expensive if I work with only 2 users. I think the licensing is sometimes a bit blurry to me. What is adviced in my situation?
 
VM Console is meant for troubleshooting and basic config. Not actual use. RDP/VNC in to the guest for better performance.

Thanks for the reply. I've been checking VNC and RDP.
The big problem with VNC is that it does not support local stuff like USB.

RDP solutions offers usually nothing but windows systems and a couple of others.. I would like to virtualize OSX ML with some client usb support. The citrix XenDesktop is not able to do that.

The ARD protocol is also not very good.

Most important is that i should be able to log in with any device like tablet, phone or pc/mac. So i can make from my phone a workstation, able to log into osx.. or use a pc with local storage, audiocard to control a recording program on the workstation
 
View running over PCoIP has good video quality. We use it heavily here at work (with both zero clients and the client app) and I can stream video from Youtube without problems. It works *close* to a physical box. I can't speak for how well some of the more aggressive 3D applications would work, all our graphic designers and engineers are using physical desktops.

That being said, View currently only supports Windows as its operating systems and I've heard nothing of expanding to Linux or OSX at least in the near future. So if you were hoping for OSX you are out of luck there.

i know there's a virtual desktop client which perhaps does the job... i haven't gotten around to test it. Just know that the VNC protocol is not sufficient from various reading sources. I hope the other protocol does work. Perhaps download a version to test, before buying.

also know that OSX is officially not legal to install in an OS where the hardware is NON apple. However,.. fine lines tell somewhere that OSX server is allowed.. just need to be sure. Prefer to have all legal for good support and no hickups with not working updates w/e :)
 
View and PCoIP isn't going to work with OSX. None of them will. It's either VNC or a 3rd party tool for OSX.

Real shame... i was really hoping to make a virual desktop environment to log into multiple machines to work in...

A bit of a wonky solution. .maybe i can get one VM to passtrough a pcoip solution, but it actually just passes trough usb and video from another vm. Absolutely don't know if it's possible.. just being creative with some abstract thoughts

We're using the Samsung Syncmasters right now, but i've got plans on ordering one of the new HP's with the new Tera2 chips they announced at VMworld.
 
I found the best remote desktop software so far.. unfortunately not with a USB passtrough, but likely with microphone. which is not super nessacary.. but hey..

it's called Splashtop, and works for mac and windows.. so running it in workstation vm's, and has the ability to wake on lan, makes it a really interesting thing. all the rest is just i guess via vSphere console.

It can play games with around 30 FPS.. so i guess audio editing (which some people do with it apparently) and 3d/video editing won't be much of a problem. Let alone graphic/webdesign :)... for our uses, it's also free which is a nice extra.
 
I use workstation 8 for working with the VM's directly. Vsphere console feels slow compared to WS. RDP works well also.

As stated before the CLI is for troubleshooting only.

True and totally right. CLI will be used for non-workstation OS like webserver, router etc.. I'm probably going for a simple RDP program rather than Citrix or VMware View, since I also need more management tools (citrix at least 3 servers... which is more machines nearly than I need to use RDP for.. and also costly)

I was speaking about the ESXi CLI in specific. You can use more than one way to interface with a CLI only client. I still prefer Workstation 8.
