Pff, buy a 1950 on ebay.
My budget was a little higher than yours (1800), but for $1699 I actually just bought another ESX host with the following specs.

Dual Quad Core's @ 1.86 Ghz
16GB of RAM
Dual Power supplies
PERC 5/I
with 2 73GB 15k rpm SAS drives

(I should mentioned it's still under Dell warranty until 06/2010)

One dual core processor and only 512MB ram? I wouldn't even bother.

If this is for home, check with the Vmware compatibility guide and consider building yourself a whitebox. 512mb of RAM isn't going to cut it. You'll want aroudn 2GB at the BARE minimum. Although, you didn't really explain your goals with this server :D

i already have 4gb ram and i'll be using it to run pbxinaflash, windows home server .redhat and server 2008 for now

i run WHS in vmware server and player and it works great with bridged network, i had some issues getting the mac address to work with a static lan ip... butother than that it was easy
