Hey guys,

I'm piecing together a new build for my productivity system and want you guys input for running windows 7 on a ramdisk using Vmware. Quick look at build.

AMD 8350 on Corsair H80
32gb ram 1600mhz
Asus Crosshair V
120 gb Corsair Force GT SATA III (OS)
2tb hd for storage

I plan on using Dataram ramdisk to setup a 20GB ramdrive to use for Win 7 OS in VmWare and was looking at the Highpoint RocketRaid 2710 for a raid card to setup (3) Corsair Force GT SATA III in raid 0 to save the image of the VM from the ramdisk. I figure with a read/write throughput of roughly 1.5 GB/s on the raid 0 setup, saving and loading the image from system reboots wouldn't be so cumbersome. Also, I plan on having an UPS on this system as well. What are y'all thoughts?

Why not just use a 32gb SSD to put the Win 7 OS on?
 
Performance is what I'm looking for. I currently have that setup already. I'm currently using a 60gb Sandisk SSD drive for VM usage. The new setup will consist of Win 7 64 on the ramdisk. Linux and others will run on the raid 0 array.
 
Well guys, I ended up picking up the Sabertooth rev 2.0 board w/ 32gb 1866mhz memory. I got the Highpoint 2720 sgl and 3 Kingston HyperX 3k 120gb. I will post further information when build is done.
 
FWIW I just put together a similar setup for running VMs in ramdisk, works great =)

i7 3820 @ 5Ghz
LSI SAS9211-8I raid card

currently with 4x 256gb crucial M4 drives in RAID 0, eventually will get 4 more and do RAID10

I'm also using 8GB of ram as a ramcache, via the ASUS built in utility

excellent setup for cross platform development, running win7 as host OS with linux/osx guests .. especially with the improved virtualized graphics drivers in latest releases of VMware workstation, no need to mess with VT-d or ESXi
 
joining in with the server rig in my sig... launching the OS's even from a 2 x 1TB RAID0 array is so fast with no BIOS screen to wait for... mmmmm
