VMware 4 CPU Cores - How to Guide

I can confirm this is working really well.

Got both my quad cores & my new 2 x Xeon running with smp -4.

Workstation is a lot better then VMWare Server ..

I have to agree. Workstation is better on many levels. It's been running for a couple of days now and it is rock solid steady. Memory usage is way down. Might have to put this on my remaining boxen. I am installing Win7 on my lappy next week and I'm hoping it is as good as everyone says regarding memory usage. If so, then I can save my money on the memory upgrade I was looking at and spend it towards an SSD upgrade as well as a nebook.

Well just to provide additional data points. I installed (dual boot) Win7 on my laptop and I gotta say, I am very very impressed. Memory usage from Vista is way down. I can definitely forego the memory upgrade.

Between Win7 & Workstation (and 1 VM vs 2 VMs), I've got more than enough memory and my laptop is very responsive.

I got workstation running on windows7 64 bit using all four cores no problem, but apparently windows7 has problems with VMWare using NAT. I can boot linux and the system monitor shows all four cores available and it will even tell me that it's connected to the network but if I try to open a web site or run f@h they will never load.

Are you using NAT or bridged? If anyone has NAT working on windows 7 I would really like to know how to get it running again.

I am having problems with NAT. Discovered today. When on my Sprint AirCard, I have to use NAT as I obviously only have one IP Address I can use and it didn't work. I use Bridged usually.

go into your network connections.. find the network connections for the VM.. go to the preferences.. then you will see a thing that says vmware bridge protocol.. check that and see if it fixes it when using bridged mode.. doing that is actually the only way my vm's will get online now for some reason.. before i had to use NAT but then that quit working after i changed my router..

Bridged has never worked for me. I connect through a wifi card and NAT is the only option I've ever been able to use. Is there anyway to configure bridged mode to work with wireless?

I don't think the fact that it's wireless should affect anything. Try sirmonkey's suggestion and see if that helps.

Ah, great link :)

I have had my two VM's running rock solid for quite some time now!

Wow... just found out about this. Looks to be working for me. Now for the best PPD how many VM's should I be running on a Q6600 with four cores enabled? One or two?

You should run the least number of VMs that you can while using up all of your cores. Using VMWare Player or Server, you'll need to run two VMs.

I was talking more for the four-core vm workstation tweak. But it looks like using two four-core vm's is more for the i7's. So looks like I answered my own question. Run either two two-core vm's or one four-core vm. Plus with the slower A2 core now out I may just have to run all four cores on a vm just to make deadlines. :(

With an i7 or decently-clocked C2Q, you still wouldn't have any problems meeting the deadlines on 1920-point workunits with two-core VMs.

Unfortunately it's a stock Q6600 on a Dell T3400. No BIOS overclock functions and I can't BSEL mod it. Plus I use it for work so there's other things running on it sucking up resources.
