VMware 4 CPU Cores - How to Guide

If anyone has VMWare Server -- can you test this ??

According to the article, this is confirmed with Workstation & Player ..

Not sure about server though ...

I couldnt get it to work on player. I'll worry more about when its not 2am though. :)

since im chuggin down coca cola's right now.. ill screw around and test this for you guys.. since i dont really plan to run the vm anyways it wont really effect my points and will help yall out..

ok on to testing now..
first off i am using version 6.5.0 VMware workstation

update..

yes it does work.. you need to make sure you completely close all the vmware files in your task manager..

ill try to get pictures to prove it.. im just having a hard time remembering how to setup the network crap to get it to download a WU..

ok heres the proof everyone..

also note.. you can not restart the folding client using the restart button in vmware workstation.. it will throw up and error claiming it doesnt support 4 cores.. you have to shut the VM off then turn it back on..

ok thats my good deed for the month.. back to BOINC i go..

oh yeah.. forgot to add.. i did not bother with that virtualHW.version thing as you can see in the screen shot.. so its your choice to see if it effects anything..

I think I will use that as my quote of the week ...

Yeah, please let you know how it goes.
I have heard from about 5 users from different forums that it works in player ...
But I want a [H] member to confirm that ...

ha ha.. dispatch worker.. screw that job.. ill never do that crap.. i was an EMT for 2 years.. that was bad enough.. no way in hell you would get me to do dispatch..

btw i updated my other post with proof that this works..

VMWare Player 2.5.1 & 2.5.2

Host: WinXP x64
Guest: Ubuntu 8.04 x64

This does NOT work. VMWare Player indicates it has 4 cores and VMWare does not support. VMWare will not start.

ill mess with the vmware player to get it to work.. but i know it works on the workstation version.. and honestly i think the workstation is way better then using the vmware player only..

I can't run VMWare Server or Workstation on my laptop as it screws with my Sprint AirCard. I've had to back to player on it. I run player on all my other boxes currently. Need to install VMWare Server on my main desktop, but that'll have to be next weekend.

Except Workstation isn't free whereas Player and Server are.

sure it is... :p lol

so it doesnt work with vmware player eh?

just right click folding.vmx.. go to open with.. select vmware player... boom everythings done.. it will read the settings directly from the config file..

Well, tried this with VMWare player (version 2.5.2), but no go on the 4 cores.

I'm getting the same thing Parja is getting. Could it be Vista as a host vs XP? Sirmonkey's screens look to be from an XP host, yes?

I get the same error message as Parja on WinXP Pro x64, but I am using Ubuntu 8.04 x64 as my guest OS.

in the config did you only change the numvcpu core count only or did you also do that other change with the virtualhw.version to 7? the virtualhw.version setting might be required with the newer versions because im using vmware player 2.5.0

I like everyone else would like to reduce the number of VMs I am running, but my VMs are rock solid stable. Unless there is a benefit (reduced overhead obviously from running 1 vs two VMs, I'd rather not muck with my setup much.

My hwversion was already 7. VM was created using the latest version of VMWare Server. In the article it mentions Max CPU, but that line isn't part of my config. Hmm. I wonder if ADDING it might correct my issue.

I don't have much time to muck with it tonight as I have to get on a place at 6am tomorrow and I won't be up much longer. It'll be a couple of weeks before I have time to really muck with anything as I won't be home till the 17th (weekend trip planned for next Friday thru Sunday which are the only days I'll be home)

I changed both of the settings mentioned in the article...

virtualHW.version = "7"
numvcpus = "4"

try without changing the virtualhw.version.. i believe the default is 4.. and see if that works if you havent tried it already..

both of my tests i didnt touch the virtualhw.version setting..

Yup, tried that and still no go.

Are you running Player on the same computer as Workstation? I wonder if there's some common files between the two that's enabling Player to do more on your computer than it should be able to.

Also, you said you were running 2.5.0. I might have to try installing that and see if maybe it's a version thing.

yeah its the vmware player that came with vmware workstation.. its possible thats the reason..

That may possibly be the reason. I think YOUR player is may be the same as ours, but the underlying stuff is likely to be different since you also have workstation which we knew from the article does work.

Yup, just got Workstation up and running and it works like a charm with the included Player (2.5.2 build 156735, the same version as is currently available for download). So apparently there's something included in Workstation that lets you run the VM with 4 cores.

With the affinity set to idle in the VM, it's running really smooth too.

Is there anyway to get VMWare Workstation without paying an insane price for it?

On a Q6600, anyone know if you're still better off running one instance per 2 cpus or with the A2 core, is one per 4 the way to go?

Well, you can hit up the 30-day trial and hopefully someone figures out how to get it to work with Server or Player in the meantime.

That is a very tough question to answer.

Stanford's answer for a quad core is 1 x SMP using 4 cores
From a PPD standard , 2 x SMP using 2 cores eash seems to earn more.

It is really up to you in the end.

If you only run 1 x VM, you don't have to devote so much of your systems ram toward the VM and since it will only use approx 95%-98% CPU , your system will seem a little more responsive.

for the CC i ran 2 vm's each running 2 cores but doing 4 cores worth of work.. i didnt bother messing with it to find out which way was more efficient.. to much of a pain in the ass.. let alone having to reinstall the vm's 5 or 6 times a week..

Well, with being able to run notfred's on all 4 cores in a single VM, you should be able to run two instances in one VM by just telling notfred's to run an instance of the SMP client per 2 cores.

Well, I installed VMWare Workstation this morning (was working on my client's desktop so my laptop was free). VMWare Workstation will run 4 cores and I am able to run a second VM (non-folding) that doesn't take very much CPU cycles or memory. I am pretty pleased. On top of all that, my Sprint AirCard doesn't have issues with Workstation. I had to uninstall VMWare Server because it didn't play well with my AirCard.

Running one VM vs two has a few benefits. The biggest is memory usage. Since I'm only running one, I only use 768MB of RAM vs 1536MB. I'm using Vista Ultimate x64 and it isn't the best for Memory Management. I've heard a LOT of good things about Win7 x64 and I think I will be upgrading to that very shortly to see if I can reduce some of my RAM issues.

Overall I am VERY pleased.

Been running for a few hours. Gotta say, I am very impressed. My machine now (vs 2 VM clients) is much snappier. I'm not always running out of physical memory. I'm going to try a dual boot of Vista & Win7. I've got the partition ready, but I'm on the road and can't find a single person in this entire damn building with a blank DVD-R so I can burn the iso and install Win7 while I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs (waiting on someone else to complete a task that looks like it might take an entire day).

I'm hoping between Win7 and VMWare Workstation, I don't have to worry about a memory upgrade for my laptop. The memory swapping was getting on my nerves.

good to see its working for ya.. i personally like the workstation better.. much cleaner.. and doesnt leave extra icons in the task bar.. just the vmware workstation icon..

I will probably buy. I need this for my business laptop so this is a write-off.

So just to add to the pile, I tried this in Player 2.5.2 and it didn't work. So you do need Workstation; none of the free options will work with four-core VMs. Workstation costs $190, and there's no way in hell I'm paying that kind of money just to simplify my F@H setup a bit, so I guess I'm sticking to two VMs for the time being.

For me the cost is justifiable. I need to be able to create VMs for my business and VMWare Server will NOT play nice with my Sprint AirCard. VMWare Workstation does. It's not a cost I wish to incur, but for me to do what I have to do, I'm game.

Running one VM vs two does provide added benefits. Since I'm not using as much memory, my laptop is much snappier. I was looking at a memory upgrade, I can forgo that now since I'm not having to swap as much. Now I can use the funds I would have had to spend on memory on a new Lenovo X200s to compliment my work machines.

QFT

I think ill just stick with Server 2008 instead on my dedicated boxes....it scales witht the logical cores on your cpu.
