I recently pruchased a professionally Vmodded Built By ATI 9800 Pro from a user on this forum. (thread)

Transaction went off without a hitch, everything happenned exactly like it should.

Except that the card appears to be broken. I'm not accusing anyone or anything; I have no reason to believe Jared has anything but good intentions.

We wanted to see what the [H] had to say about the issue.

The story:

Fedex dropped off the package today. I came home and opened it, it was well packed, took the card out of the box, and plugged it into my PC. I connected the two fan plugs and the power plug for the card, and connected the rheostat to the big GPU heatsink.

Power on. No video. No beeping. My IC7-Max3 acted like it was going to POST; I use the FanEQ feature, and the CPU fan slowed down to the speed I set, but other than that the system never gave any indication that it was even sort of working.

I tried the standard approaches to troubleshooting: remove all other peripherals and cards, reset CMOS, played musical molexes with the fans and card power plug... nothing. Same thing every time.

I tried it in two other computers with the same result.

Systems I've tried this in (all at stock clock and voltages):

IC7-Max3 / P4 2.4C / Antec 350W PSU
IC7-Max3 / P4 2.8C / Enermax 350W PSU
Dell i850 mobo / P4 1.5A / Dell PSU

All producing the exact same situation. All these combinations normally work perfectly, under load from multiple HDDs and opticals, with the two IC7s overclocked to 3.2GHz+.

The only thing I can't really try is a higher powered PSU, although without any other peripherals and at stock settings other than the card, I don't see a name-brand 350W PSU being and issue.

Thoughts? Comments? Flames? Please, share...

edit: clarifications

the only thing I don't understand which makes me wonder if the card is actually dead is if the card is dead shouldn't it give a bad vga beep instead of no beeps at all? The card was working find in my computer about 4 days ago. I have a 480 watt trupower. As soon as I removed the card I put it into an antistatic bag. Is there anything else goatlord could try? Or is the card definately dead.

what was the old card?
That sounds like what happened to me when i went from a GF3 to a 9800NP, it wouldn't post or anything, but no beeps cause it was a power issue.

I was thinking power issue... I had an FX5200 in before, and right now I'm using a GF2 MX400 :(

Maybe I'll have to go borrow a nice PSU from BB tomorrow.

joEziLLAH Don't borrow a PSU from BB, the card is dead. Send it back for a refund.
how do you know the card is dead??? another user just said it could be a power issue and when I sent the card it was working...

windows loads and he can see it with his old videocard so not just dead monitor. if a videocard is dead or if there is no videocard attached then the motherboard gives a bad beep code right?

Or no post. He already said he tried 2 different PSU's, including a DELL psu, so that leaves the power failure out of the question, monitor dead?He said it worked before the card, a new card couldn't fux0r the monitor.

What else is there?

I've had problems with video cards that don't post or don't beep, and it was indeed the video card.

Like said before, dead/bad card, send it for refund.

a friend's computers ram was not put in right and it caused this issue, try to see if the ram is in right

I'm actually working on the monitor it was connected to right now... it does indeed light up :D

The memory hasn't moved for a month or so, and its working fine (passing memtest and such) with this older card.

Any other suggestions?

Is it possible that one or both of the pots got fried or turned too far at some point during the transfer, and so now the card is being overvolted?

I was thinking that, with Jared's blessing, I could lift one leg of both potentiometers to disable the Vmodding. I'm no slouch with a soldering iron; I wouldn't hurt anything doing it. But, if I'm going to be returning it to him, I'd need his permission.

I already talked to him a little about that, and he didn't seem too keen on it, but I thought I'd throw it out there to see what you all thought.

may sound kind of simple, but try turning the computer on with the monitor in the off position, then turn it on once it starts to post and see if that works. i had to do that for some reason with my 22" NEC and a radeon 9500, might work, or might not.

good luck getting it to work

Isn't his option to be "keen" on you wanting to return something that is defective.

I and many here are vouching for the "return" option, quite obvious.

hmm.. does the monitor have multiple video ins? (just checking little things...)

Is there any visible damage to the card? ie burns, etc Is the card's agp copper bus damaged?

You must not read very well. The card has a vmod, a V effen Mod

.... what does a v-mod have to do with damage?

a v-mod is just small wire(s) going from point(s) to other(s)... has nothing to do with a blown cap or an injured bus... please explain your logic? Or shh.

No point in explaining when you cannot comprehend common sense. Keep going.

ok, I don't know what your problem is... but we are trying to work out to make sure if the card is dead or not. Please stop flaming in this thread. I sold him the card, I know what it was like and he knows what's going on with it now. You are the only one in this thread saying that it MUST be a dead card, others are actually trying to help with the problem to check it. If you believe that since I'm trying to figure out what is wrong I must be ripping him off or something... ask him yourself. I already told him I would give him a full refund even if he messes with the vmod to see if he can get it to work. Seriously, you sound like you have anger issues and you have picked this thread to flame...

thank you to all here who are trying to suggest things to try

I don't see many posters here to exclaim the obvious. Sorry if my bluntness sounds like a "flame?", but anyways, like I said, it's a dead card, and I have no anger management issues, like I said, sorry my bluntness upsets you, next time don't sell cards you know don't work due to your modifications, how that one sound?

Just trying to help the innocent, I've seen many situations like this arise in many other forums...Seller is 99.999% at fault, but then again, I'm a "flame?" right? OK. Seems like you just didn't like what I said cause it means him returning the card to you, which he is anyways, cause it was DOA.

explain why a vmod could be within what I said in my post and stop changing the subject if you're so right.

right... my modifications...
seriously you didn't even go check what you were talking about. why would I say the card was professionally modded if I did it? How is having the card in my system running for over 3 months and then sending off a working card "selling a card I know doesn't work due to my modifications" I'm glad I didn't sell the card to you... goatlord actually understands that just because the card isn't working on his system doesn't mean that I sold him a dead card. Just because you had a bad experience in the past with a seller, which it's become obvious that you have, doesn't mean that everyone who sells an item on a forum is evil and trying to rip everyone off...

I was at jared's before he sent it and it was definately working then (bastard wouldnt sell me the card cheaper =p).

For what its worth...

Well, that your WRONG for starters
before you make yourself a general pain in the ass, and start throwing around wild accusations
maybe you should actually get up to speed on the latest power requirements and issues

this isnt to say the card might not infact be dead, however actually troubleshooting the issue before jumping to conclusions always works out better, especially in a transaction situtaion like this, so shut it down now, or you will be having the problem

for starters, there has been a fundemental change in how mobos and CPUs are powered
older PSU where geared to output a very healthy amperage on the +5V rail, but now many mobos and cpus are powered off the +12V rail, leaving even monster watt PSU short on that rail,

Watts dont mean Jack

specifically use this
http://takaman.jp/D/index.html?english

and use the values listed here for newer graphics cards (you can manually add them into the calculator above) make sure to use the additive result of the power supplied from the AGP slot and the auxillary power to the card, the total isnt given on the charts
Power Consumption of Contemporary Graphics Accelerators. Part I: Graphics Cards on ATI Chips
Power Consumption of Contemporary Graphics Accelerators. Part II: NVIDIA vs. ATI

and double check the processor value against this database
http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm
if there is an auxillary +12V power connector on the mobo, add it to the +12V rail
if not add it to the +5V rail

and follow the instructions here for other considerations (like temperature)
Whats dont mean Jack (again)
I generally deduct 1\3rd off the amps a PSU is rated
to reflect the difference between the temperature it was tested at 25C
and the normal operating temperature in the enclosure 40C,
because its typically exhausting the HeatSink

as the title suggests, it aint the watts that is important
its the proper distribution of amps to the various rails

forgot to mention inputting a value for a CPU is a little different, since the database is simply listed in consumption in watts (max) what you have to do is add in a guess as to the Amps in either the +5V or +12V box (select other CPU not listed from the drop down menu)
that will give you the watts to the right, so, by trial and error adjust the amps to the watts to match the database figure

or just convert the watts to amps with a calculator first
AMPS = Watts / Voltage

so an Athlon 64-3200+ with a Thermal Design Power figure of 89W being powered off the +12V rail...

89 divided by 12 = 7.41Amp
which is really close to waht is listed in that calculator
(88.8 watts and 7.4A)

also note the utilization box at the top, that simply applies to the search returns whan you look for compliant PSU, not the figures listed
since many manufacturers lie like dogs regarding their specs
its best to post a thread regarding what supplies your considering
also that is a Japanese site, and some of those brands wouldnt be readily available here
and some we have arent listed

definatively rule out the power supply as the issue

sorry, aside from the biological impossibility
I dont swing that way :p

goatlord, you need to go back and look at the amperage for the various boards and PSU combinations you have tried

however, that is to definatively rule out the PSU issue
thyere is also the very real possibility that the card has been shot
far easier than most realize, and the fault very hard to definatively attribute
please review my > ESD & Electromigration Rant ;)

Im confident that Jared701 is a responsible and square trader
and that in the end both of you will get this sorted out

if you do find out that your anemic on the +12V rail to power that card and combo
drop by the Power Supply forum and start a thread, then link me in a PM and I'll give you a hand ;)

Antec 350 has 16A on the +12V rail @ 25C
Enermax EG365P-VE has 17A on the +12V rail @25C

in reality closer to 10.6 and 11.3
without the actual configs its a little tough to tell
but your powering modern mobos and CPUs on +5V geared PSUs
a "new" PSU (ATX12V) would see those rails pumped up quite abit
incrementally with each new revision v1.3 & v2.0

also add more +12V draw for the overclock
basically your in the same boat as half the posters in the Power Supply forum

so what is the status on this now?

joEziLLAH ignored an Admin's warnings ( over 4 times  )
and was awarded a vacation that had nothing to do with this thread,
but I like to checkup on unresolved problems ;)
