I tried following Xilikon's guide on here and after I started the folding.vmx file, i get this:

 
Go into VMware player preferences and check the networking option, it seems the VM could not connect. If you have it set to bridged, then set it to network address translation (NAT). Vice versa if you have NAT set though, then reboot the VM and try again.
 
You must shutdown the VM first before modifying those options, once its off they will be unlocked.

Also are you connected via a switch? Which would explain why you can't see a DNS server.

new problem: it wont reconfigure to my name instead of notfred. i change it, click reconfigure, wait, and it goes back to the original..

you had better luck than i did today. i spent 10 hours in this chair trying to get one of the smp's working. finally gave up for today.
