1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
VM Server, DC, DNS, DHCP, TMG, RRAS, VPN, 2K8R2/Server12 testing. Probably all on Hyper-V but would like to try ESXi as well

US, SoCal yes I can hit MC, Frys, Etc..be jealous :cool:

USB3 and sata3 is about all I need.

I need to separate out my current rig (VM in Sig) which has both my production(home VMs) and my test network. It's getting cumbersome so I just want to split them out.

I was thinking of an FX-8120 combo, or even the 1045T combo from MC, thoughts?

I already bought 2 of this RAM here Since it was on sale for $193, but I'm not opposed to returning it for something else.

sounds like you know exactly what you should be getting.

1045T only has 6 cores; even though the performance is faster, it won't help you run more VMs.

The 8120 would be a better fit in this case. I'm still new to VMs, so I don't know how well hyperthreading 4 cores into 8 with a 3570k would do for a VM. But for resell value, the i5 3570k will hold its value longer.
 
Non server Intel stuff doesn't support hardware pass through. That's why I was looking for AMD

There are, its just harder to find the right motherboard. The cpu's are easy, intel has a list that support vt-x/vt-d. 2400, 2500, etc
 
Do you have a spare video card? Or will you need to buy one?

AFAIK, none of the AMD chipsets (890FX, 970, 990X, and 990FX) that supports hardware passthrough have any onboard GPU capability. As such, you're gonna need a 3rd party video card with those mobos.
 
Do I need one to run it headless? I guess I can throw in a cheap card if its needed to boot with. Would I be better off with an AMD server board?

AFAIK, a lot of motherboards can't boot without a video card.

As for consumer AMD mobos, from the MC list of AMD mobos in their $40 off flyer, I'd go with the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. CPU wise, I guess go for the FX-8120.

Your budget is too low to afford an AMD server board. In fact, once you get into that price range, you might as well go Intel.

Indeed, Think I'll roll on down to MC this Friday and pick up the CPU and mobo. I was considering a sabertooth for the 5 year warranty. Any reason you prefer the Gigabyte?

Because it was the second best choice after that Sabertooth actually. The Sabertooth isn't listed on MC's July flyer so I'm wasn't sure if the Sabertooth was available from MC. That Gigabyte was available from MC.
