Some newbie VM questions:
I'm looking at free virtualization options (VMware, etc.) for my home and am wondering how power consumption scales when the various VMs are not in use. I'm planning on 3 VMs: windows, linux, & a NAS o/s. The NAS may or may not be part of the base o/s. In general, I want most of the hardware to be in a low power state except for the required minimum to power the NAS when I'm not using the other VMs. However, I want the headroom where I can power up additional cores/memory for large encoding tasks.
- Does all virtualization software effectively manage power? I.e. if the resource isn't being used will it place it in a low power state?
- What does "not being used" mean to the VM server? For example, would clicking on "sleep" within the windows VM be required to drop the reserved hardware into the low power state?
