Ive been playing with Vmware player, not to sure what the difference between work staion and player are. BUT i have been playing and installing os's and stuff and love it, can't wait to get my 2008R2 Hypeer V server up and running.

I so need to build a nice work station some day! I miss my dual 23" lcd's.
 
Yeah I always wondered what the difference between player and workstation are, I just use workstation all the time.

It used to be that you couldn't create or modify VMs in Player, but I guess that's changed now. Looks like it doesn't differ in functionality compared to Workstation, though the licensing allows only personal, non-commercial use.

Snapshot functionality (IIRC), additional networking, some expanded experimental OS support, ACE support, and a few other things.
 
Yeah, I figured there would be more offered in Workstation over Player.

Still light years better than Windows VPC and VirtualBox, IMO.
 
I still like Virtual Box a tad better. Seamless Ubuntu on my Win7 workstation is win.
 
VMware Server did headless ages ago if you really can't live without it. Otherwise I was able to script starting of VMs in Workstation using a scheduled task or batch file in Windows (or the usual init scripts in Linux). It ain't headless, however.

Er actually I just remembered you can close workstation and the VMs run headless if you have the option configured. I suppose that may be something it has over Player. Also Team support, if you've got several that depend on one-another.
 
I use esxi for everything, done on a remote machine and I can pickup where I left off.
