I was planning on buying a GTX 1080 before my Vive got here but they are sold out everywhere so I am trying it out with my two 4 GB GTX 680 in SLI. I read that SLI doesn't work in VR so I disabled SLI and used one card HDMI port to run my 4K TV Monitor and the other card HDMI for the Vive. Here is what the Steam VR Test showed, it said "capable"

I setup the software and hardware and everything is working fine, but when I try running the tutorial all I see is a scene with the Earth, the moon, another planet, etc but NOT the tutorial images. Is there something wrong with my setup or is the GTX 680 just too weak?

Thanks

is the headset and controllers being tracked properly? If you ever lose tracking, or frame rates drop to sub-par levels, will normally default back to the "home" area (which I believe is the HTC earth background is you installed the vive software) to prevent VR sickness.

I have no idea if this GPU will be strong enough... but that likely depends on what you're trying to run. Even with a 980ti and 6600K @ 4.5ghz, I do get occasional frame drops in some games. Unfortunately, most VR games I've played don't really give you many graphics options to scale them to lower end hardware

GTX 680 is fine.

I have a 2GB 680 and a Vive and every game I have tried so far works perfectly fine at a solid 90fps.

The Lab, Audioshield, Out of Ammo, Space Pirate Trainer, Job Simulator, Holopoint, Portal Stories VR, Universe Sandbox, Fantastic Contraption, Tilt Brush, Hover Junkers, Budget Cuts, Brookhaven Experiment, Cloudlands Minigolf all work great.

Well, I have two 680s not in SLI and I tried the HDMI output of both cards. My monitor worked on either card but not the Vive. I went to Vive support page and tech took remote control of my computer and ran the Steam VR Test. He got the same results that I posted above. Here is what a summary of what he said:

Me:
I setup the software and hardware and everything is working fine, but when I try running the
tutorial all I see is a scene with the Earth, the moon, another planet, etc but NOT the tutorial
images.

Would it be ok to you if I'll access your computer remotely?
Me:
yes
KC:
5:58 PM
I've made a test on your computer. That's the steamVR performance tool.
KC:
5:59 PM
And I apologize to say, the GPU isn't compatible.
KC:
5:59 PM
The graphics card.
KC:
5:59 PM
It requires an upgrade.
KC:
6:00 PM
Although we were able to complete the setup and launch the Vive, still it wont be able to render the virtual reality
applications
Me:
i ran test before and the result said that gpu is capable its lower than recommended but others have used the same gpu
with no problems r u sure it cant be something else
KC:
6:01 PM
The recommended specs for GPU is GTX 970 and higher.
KC:
6:01 PM
Your GPU shows yellow. That is why we were able to see display on the headset.
KC:
6:02 PM
But in terms of playing something in there, I mean applications, that's the time we will get an issue.
Me:
why does test result say card is capable low quality vr
KC:
6:04 PM
Capable or running the Vive. And it does.
KC:
6:04 PM
But running a game using the Vive is different scenario.
Me:
that is pretty deceptive
KC:
6:05 PM
Running a game requires more power from the graphics card.
KC:
6:07 PM
Your graphics card were able to handle the Vive while on used. But as soon as an application was launched, that's
where the issue will come up.
Me:
well i have seen other people on the internet say they could run games in vive with the same gpu, but that cannot be
confirmed
KC:
6:09 PM
They may be able to, but that is like forcing their computer to run applications. But eventually, their computer will
be affected resulting on damaging.
Me:
ok, thank you for your time

So, what do you think of that? Is it baloney or truth?

Its ~baloney, but the 680 IS under their recommended spec. Pretty much, even if there IS a problem, the helpdesk guys won't even look at it.

"the headset caught fire"

well it appears that your PC does not meet minimum spec

yeah, that's garbage! Plenty of people are running below the minimum spec just fine! If anything, you'll just get shit performance... but it will run as long as it's not something super old.

So OP, did you setup your room etc through steam? You never answered my question about the headset and controllers being tracked properly. They (both controllers, both lighthouses and the headset) should all be solid green in the steam VR window that pops up. If those are ok, is the green light on, on the side of the headset? and if so, is there light coming out of the HMD display? Or is it black?

My suggestion would be try skipping the breakout box and hook the HMD up directly to the PC, just to rule out a bad box. Further, I would also try using a different USB and HDMI cable (you can remove the top strap to get access to the ports) and see if that fixes it. A few people over on r/vive have had issues with faulty cables.

If none of that works, check out the Vive sub-reddit! Lots of great info over there regarding the vive. I'm sure someone else has experienced the same issue you're having

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention, try using different USB ports! I had issues using a 3.1 port... but 3.0 works great. Others have had issues with USB 3.0, but 2.0 worked fine! good luck

It is bogus as I do play all the games I listed on a weekly basis on my 680.

My friend who has a Vive runs it fine on a GTX 770 as well which is essentially an overclocked 680.

My SteamVR performance test is about the same score as you too. However I do have a faster CPU. I'm running a 4.5GHz i7 4770K but I'm not sure that would be the reason you are having problems.

Yeah, I knew as soon as he saw I had a 680 he would give me the stock answer.

Well I did say this in my OP

So I thought that was clear, but yes, I did the room setup through Steam VR. Headset and both controllers are green and tracking properly. I can see images in the HMD, I see the default 'home' scene.

Thanks I will try all of that. Oh, your talking about USB ports gave me an idea! I only have USB 2.0 and I have an RGB keyboard. It uses so much power it needs 1 USB 3.0 port but TWO USB 2.0 ports. Maybe that is the problem! I will try without it. Thanks for all the suggestions!

oh ok! I see. Yeah, deffinately try a different hub if you can for USB.

Are you drivers up to date? Maybe try reinstalling steamVR? Can you launch a game? Seems odd that you can see the default home area but cant start the tutorial

Well I tried everything and nothing worked and I couldn't wait any longer so I decided to buy a 900 series card. I drove to my local Microcenter and they had 7 different models of the GTX 980Ti on sale, all brand new in the box. I decided to buy the fastest one they had! I bought the ASUS GeForce GTX 980 Ti MATRIX Platinum that came out with a price of $719.99 for $500, saving over $200. This thing is a beast! It comes out of the box with a boost clock at 1317MHz, I was able boost it up to 1367MHz and the actual in-game frequency was 1503MHz. That comes pretty close to a stock 1080 and I think about 25% less than an OC 1080. If I can sell my two 4GB 680s for $150 each it means I am out of pocket $200. My Steam VR score went up from a 1.7 to an 11 with all bars maxed out green! I plugged in the Vive and it worked instantly! This should hold me over until the 1080Ti or new Titan comes out.

WOW! Thats super odd. Maybe the port on your old GPU was bad or something? Congrats though, enjoy :)

OH, as for games to buy, my personal favorites so far

Out of Ammo (outstanding game.... price going up soon... get it while you can)
Audio Shield
Pool Nation VR

Thanks, any suggestions? :)
Hover Junkers, Pool Nation VR, Elite Dangerous, Vanishing Realms

The Lab and Portal Stories are free

Virtual Desktop (for the adult content), even if you're not into it, everyone will ask you about it
