Vista/XP Problem

Hey Everyone I am having a slight problem...

About half way through re-installing XP I realized that I have misplaced my CD Key. So I went ahead and bought Windows Vista to replace it. But even when I put in the Vista disc, my computer goes to the halfway done Windows XP Set Up and then asks me to insert my Windows XP CD.

How do I "undo" the half way done XP setup so I can install Vista?

it's not reading your CD(or DVD).... it should NOT do what you are describing...
 
ah you are exactly right...

i restarted with nothing in the cd drive and it did the same thing....

hmmm any ideas?
 
nope, the setup screen shows up on the 4th step, installing Windows, then it asks me insert the XP disc
 
when the computer is booting there should be a prompt to boot from the cd. maybe you're not noticing it keep your eyes on it
 
ya i know exactly what you are talking about but it doesn't come up, it just goes straight to booting from the hard drive, which has the windows xp setup

i tried removing the hard drive from the boot priority but that causes it to not load anything
 
is your cd rom even spinning up at all?

if it's really an issue you could try downloading Dban and burning that to a cd then pop that in there to wipe the hard drive, but if your cd rom is crapping out that won't help
 
its definitely not my cd drive, i put the XP disc back in and it keep installing before asking for my CD key

and yes it is a DVD drive :) i used the same drive to start the XP installation
 
hmmm that's rather odd, it seems to not be seeing your vista disc at all. have you tested your vista dvd in this computer your on?
 
ya the vista disc works on this computer

and the drive that on the other computer says dvd-rom on the front lol so i don't think that's the problem

and isn't the windows xp disc a dvd too? i used it in the same drive
 
no xp isn't a dvd... well again all I can offer is that if you really think that xp needs to be wiped out , get Dban

I can't believe that.... especially since when he disables the HDD in BIOS, it still won't try and boot off of the DVD(or so he says) but STRANGER things have happened. :)
 
i just set my other drive which i know is DVD drive as master and and it still went to the hard drive

im just gonna try the dban thing i guess
 
I would strongly suggest Eraser, personally. The GUI is easier for most folks to comprehend instead of a few nonsensical command line switches for DBAN - and Eraser uses DBAN so the end results would be the same, you just get there more efficiently.

BUT BE CAREFUL and don't click unless you're 100% positive you're committed to the action you're about to undertake or you'll end up wiping your entire machine and every drive in it.
