Vista + x1950xt + games?

I am upgrading my current rig:

3200 Athlon, Radeon x800
To:
AM2 5200, with x1950xt

My question is that come fall I will want to play Conan, which is slated to be a Vista only game. 1950xt is not a DX10 card. Will support eventually come for the 1950 to allow for dx10 games? or should I just get a DX10 card (so much more money :-( though ) or should I wait for the ~$250 DX10 cards later this year?

PS another note is that I want to upgrade since my current rig cant handle Vanguard so I dont really want to wait to upgrade.
 
the way i understand it is. the card has to come from the factory direct x 10 compliant. if your in a rush just get a card now and upgrade to a midrange direct x 10 card when they are out.

That's evenly priced or slightly more than a 512MB X1950XT. If you're not going to be playing at higher than 1280x1024 I'd recommend it. That's why I purchased it. Once you start to step up to 1680x1050 I'd be concerned about the 320MB vs the 640MB. You'll be hard pressed to find a benchmark where the 320MB and 640MB don't perform just about the same at 1280x1024.
 
wasnt sure if the op was just wanting ati or not. not sure why building new rig with amd either but those are his choices. seems for right now at least intel and nvidia are the way to go. could change in the future of course.
 
Hmm that 8800 GTS is pretty cheap.

I do use a widescreen monitor so I would like to game at 1680x1050. performance/dollar should I go with the 8800?






To knothead34, I dont know what you mean by intel being the better chaice than AMD?

at toms you can see the A2M 5000 benches higher than the price equivalent C2D 6400, the 5200 is not on the bench list but it also benches higher than the C2D 6400 and they are the same price.

So at the same price the AMD benches higher why would i choose the intel, also RAM will be cheaper for the amd box then the intel.

further explaination would be nice if I am missing something
 
MBigD011, can you link to those benchmarks? I am assuming everyone goes for the Intel CPUs because they overclock like mad. My 1.80 GHz e4300 is running at 2.80 GHz easily -- undervolted with the stock cooler.

So, in other words, my $160 processor outperforms a stock e6700 -- a $500 processor -- by about 5%. I'm not sure how that compares to the A2M 5200, but I'm pretty sure that benchmark you saw would show it's much faster. I hope this helps.

The e6700 is faster than a 6000+, so a 5200+ couldn't touch the performance of an OC'd e4300. You would be saving money on the CPU while getting more performance.


As for the video card, I don't know about the x800, but if that card is pci-e, keep it for a while until the dx10 prices come down a little. But if it's AGP, spend the money you will be saving on your CPU and get a 8800gts :)
 
ah, I did not think about OCing. I didnt know the C2D was so easliy ocable. From some quick searching seems like all you have to do is adjust the fsb and still be able to keep stock cooling.

still debating the 8800, you can get the x1950xt for $220 and the 8800 is $280, is the extra $60 worth the upgrade?
 
At the moment G80 and Vista gaming seems to be close to a "curse word". Just by reading Nvidia forums there are many people reporting weird crashes and errors with Vista/G80 systems. So in that light I would suggest ATI hardware for Vista gaming at the moment. On the other hand you must consider that G80 cards are a generation ahead and their drivers will improve, so my first argument is likely to change sometime in the future.

The only problem is, ofcourse, that nobody knows when Nvidia will get its act together. On XP front its a nobrainer, G80 cards rules supreme, but that was not the OP:s question. About the Conan game, I really doubt that it will be a PURE Vista only game. Meaning that most likely you will be able to play the game in DX9 mode. The only true Vista only game I know of is the next Halo, but my memory could be wrong on that too.

If it was my system, I would get 8800GTS 320MB with Win XP and game away without Vista issues. :)

I ordered my system as the following:

Intel C2D e6400
Abit AB9 Pro mobo
2GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800
EVGA 8800 GTS

All from newegg for $845, with $60 in MIR Hopefully I can get $300-400 for my old parts.

I am gonna try my hand at OCing the cpu but I dont want to add aditional cooling, yet. Anyone know of a decent guild.
