Ok, So i discovered that my dvd drive and my main harddrive were plugged into the sata 150 sockets on my mobo, they should have been in the sata 300. so i plugged them into the sata 300 and it boots/runs fine, no problems. The problem is, windows wants a new cd key and threatens that in 3 days, windows wont work anymore because ive changed my hardware.... what should i do, i cant afford another copy of windows...

what exactly is the message you get??

I assume it wants to re-activate. if so, let it do so. if it tells you its been activated too many times (or similar message), get on the phone with the rent-a-techs for MS that live in India and get it re-activated.

your current key is good (as long as its a legit key), its just wanting to verify stuff, thats all. Happens here where I work all the time.

When i try to re-activate, it says the key has already been activated and it wants another one.

call them on the phone.. follow the instruction on the screen for contacting them by phone.. they will give you a toll free # to call.. follow the prompts the computer on the other end gives you.. you will end up talking to a person in the end, but keep on the phone (can take 10 mins or more total time, or could take 3 mins, depends on how busy they are). they can give you an activation code for your computer.

Ok, talked to them on the phone, the code they gave me was wrong the first time, the second time, they said my installation id was invalid, and i said exactly what was on the window. Microsoft says "I may be a victim of counterfeiting" but the copy i have is totally legal, bought it at microcenter. What should i do now ? Suggestions.

Call Microcenter and tell them what Microsoft said. Thats all I can think of.

Call back to Microsoft, and ask for a manager. Explain to them you bought the copy at MicroCenter, and all you did was move the plugs around on your motherboard.

I've been through this before, your not supposed to agree with microsoft when they tell you that you have a counterfeit version. Your supposed to tell them you bought it legit and that you messed around inside your computer that is why its asking for a new cd key. Than they will proceed to give you some type of new activation key which will allow you to reactive your cd key.

The first time I called, i talked to someone with an accent ( not too heavy, but noticable) who gave me a key to put in to re activate it, but it was invalid, i typed everything he said. The second time i called i got the automated system, who said my installation id was invalid.

Yes, u have to tell them that the copy u have is legit, don´t get pushed around by those microsoft techs, u bought it legit and u deserve good costumer support !!

Outsourcing, ain´t that great? :D:rolleyes:

good luck , I just spent 2 hours this morning going thru the same shit with Microsoft phone support.

Indian guy was very respectful and courteous... I'd much rather deal with him than some overpaid american highschool dropout with an attitude

I've reactivated hundreds of copies of Windows XP, and 2 dozen or so copies of Vista. Not once have I had any issues. When you get the automated prompt, type the numbers in on your keypad carefully, and when it reads back the activation numbers, type them in carefully. If you think you have made a mistake, ask for the numbers to be repeated. You're making this far harder than it needs to be ;)

Well i guess three times the charm, the automated service failed (twice now) so they sent me to a microsoft rep who was very nice and gave me the right key this time. Yay, i gots my pc back. Thanks to all that helped.
