Ok, let me get this straight to install vista upgrade on a formatted drive I need to install my copy of xp and then install vista?...Say it isn’t so? Can’t you just pop in the XP disk during vista install? Like other upgrades in the past?

NO it isn't like XP, you need to install XP, activate it ,and then install the upgrade, to be LEGAL. See the other thread about a upgrade and full install. XP also needs sp2 installed. OR ,you can use a copy of 2000 w sp4 installed. Either way, the old OS is rolled into a folder ,called windows.old, that you can remove later, and a "custom/FULL install is then done.

Eeek, when you install XP you then have to updated it to SP2, talking about eating more of your time.
