I just want to go on record as saying Im using Vista ultimate right now and its not half bad...

I had installed it last year and hated it....seemed bugy, slow and just not impresive.
I went back to XP-64 and stayed there untill yesterday....

I just Reinstalled Vista, got it all, set up and either its better with some service packs, or Im just plain crazy....

I think Im gonna stick with it and see how it goes for a few months....

Eh, a little o' this, a little o' that....

Seriously, most of the complaints and issues have been worked out with SP1. Since you just installed it, SuperFetch hasn't even really gotten to learn your habits, so it will only improve from here.

x2. You used it a year ago? HA yes as did I, and it sucked. Then SP1 came out, and everything changed. Been running Vista 64 Ultimate (with SP1 of course) since around Feb. and it's been nothing but awesome.

I wouldn't say everything changed. I was using it during the initial release, and it was pretty much fine back then. Vista was a hell of a lot more stable and mature upon its release than any other version of Windows I've used. I'm pretty much at two years of using it as of now. SP1 may have sped some things up, but there wasn't much of a night and day difference.

Exactly. I notice almost no different between Pre-SP1 and Post-SP1 Ultimate x64. The only thing that does reliably change is that copy and delete operations are considerably faster. That's it.

Whoops, forgot about that. My file copying to and from Windows 2003 Servers improved quite a bit.

Do you people never install updates? There were quite a few updates in August 07 that really helped a lot. And even without the updates, it was fine...

...yeah? Windows Update...something worth looking at once and a while.

i love vista but not ultimate, most people do NOT NEED It, in fact i am sure you dont either, home prmium is better and runs a little fast, less background crap going on and less "crap" to download and install.

Well no s--t sherlock of course I run Windows Update regularly, I was just making a point of how SP1 made Vista awesome.

Cool thing is that other "crap" is totally optional and actually labeled under "Vista Ultimate Extras" in Software Update so you don't accidently install it. But yeah, Ultimate is pretty much not worth the extra money anyway, Home Premium ftw.

Yes, most people don't need Ultimate. No, Home Premium isn't faster and doesn't have significantly fewer background services (or anything else resource intensive) going on.

I'll have to agree with how it's not so bad. Also, I half-way agree with the statement that it's not worth the money (on the Ultimate). I actually like a few of the options (like the dreamscape), but don't think it's "worth" the extra.

I also have a copy of home premium...Ill probably use that on another machine...but I got a good deal on Ultimate... so I aint complaining....

Besides, its Ultimate...It must be better right? :p

So is it that much better than XP?
I'm building a new system and just curious whether to buy XP again or Vista

I have Vista Ultimate and the built in shadow copy has justified the extra cost on a couple occassions.

Last night I did a Windows Update on my Vista x64 and when i reboot I got a BSOD. Also BSOD'd on repeat boot. I got so sick of it that I went ahead and re-installed Vista x86. Still hunting down my wireless adapters drivers :( Ugh! Such a pain. Almost as painful as getting drivers for Linux. LOL!

I dont want to say its that much better, I don't have enough time with it yet...its certainly not worse....

Im sure there are people here that have been using it for a longer time than I , that can answer that question better than me

I can say, that I'm pretty happy with it so far....but I do want to turn UAC...its pissing me off:p

Start -> type "msconfig" sans quotes in search -> enter -> click continue -> tools tab -> scroll down to "disable UAC" (4th from bottom) and click on it -> click launch -> wait 10-15 seconds, close the prompt window that comes up -> close msconfig -> restart, choose "don't run msconfig at startup".

Congratulations. Welcome to the ranks of the sane.

Thanks for the reply.
Ugh, I can't decide what to do, half of the people like it, half the people hate it, but in the end I will probably end up getting it.

Shadow copy is a service that backs up files automatically in the background. In Vista it's a tab called Previous Versions when you go to a file's properties. For those prone to err, it's invaluable.

At this point, I'd say wait for Windows 7... seriously. You can toy around with Vista if you can "acquire" it somehow, but this late in the game, if you haven't bought Vista yet, don't. Wait for Win7, it's better, faster, will be a bit leaner and meaner, and bring even more to the table...

/me makes this posting from Windows 7 build 6956 which is screamingly fast even for (technically) a pre-beta OS...

For those of us that aren't and want our disk space, however, it means far more trips to the "disk cleaning" dialog than should ever be necessary.

Not to be a totally uneducated, but when is "Windows 7" due to hit the market?

Sometime in 2009. If it keeps progressing as well as it has (and this is a pre-beta late stage alpha but it's freakin' solid and really fast), it could be out before summer. Some websites predict April, perhaps May, so we'll see what happens, but sometime in 2009 seems like a lock at this point.

I just don't like Vista, but I do like Windows 7... :D

So that means that XP had a shelf life of @ 8 -10 years and Vista will have had a life of 2 - 3 years?

Shit happens, man, what can Microsoft do, create a perfect OS which is impossible to do (even inside Steve Jobs' famed "Reality Distortion Field" such things are simply not happening)? If XP was on the market for 2-3 years then Vista came out, we wouldn't be seeing the backlash we do see over it. But XP being around as long as it was/still is became detrimental to Vista as soon as it hit store shelves, even before that actually.
