Vista ultimate For $199

When you buy retail, you're also buying Microsoft's support. Aside from that, an OEM license is supposed to only be good for one set of hardware, meaning you can't just install it on another or new computer.

Basically, if you think you'll need support from Microsoft and/or you might want to install it on another computer someday, get retail. On the other hand, OEM prices are typically half that of Retail, so if you wanted Vista on another computer, buying two OEM licences is about the same as Retail anyway.
 
Doesn't the Ultimate Retail full version (ie not the upgrade) include both the 32-bit and the 64-bit DVD's? The OEM version does not, it's two different SKU's/products.

Yes but the OEM's key works on both 32 and 64 installations.

That's why you get OEM. Plus, if you call Microsoft, you can try and probably convince them to let you install an OEM license on another computer.
 
I read that Vista's licensing has been rewriten that allows system builders to transfer the vista license. Anyone know if that applies to OEM

I can't answer this directly, but I do know what happened to me. I had installed OEM Vista Ultimate soon after it came out and acitvated it. Two weeks ago I picked up a raptor and proceded to re-install Vista. It of course would not activate. I called MS and told them that I had replaced HD's and they issued me a new activation code. Total call time was 5 minutes.
