my friend is having problems with Vista, it is in "test mode" and will not get out of it, he is using Vista Home Premium. He is also having a problem where Vista randomly stopped detecting his dvdrw drive, however BIOS still detects it.
 
What sorta install did he do? Clean/Upgrade/Hybrid?

Did he enter the CD-Key while installing Vista or choose to wait (which activates the 30 day trial which can be reset a few times)?
 
Yep, the trial gets installed when you didn't input a key. Put one in from Computer.
