Apparently Microsoft is taking issue with the claim that the company only sold 244 copies of Vista in China. No hard numbers were given but Microsoft did say sales figures for Vista are double what Windows XP sold in its first month.

"Recent speculation regarding sales data in China is inaccurate," Microsoft said in response to an inquiry from CNET News.com. "We're pleased with the positive consumer response we've seen around the globe to the security and usability enhancements in Windows Vista--and China is no exception."

Of course Vista sold more than 244 copies in China. Retail copies are probably selling slowly, but those are always a tiny fraction of sales and income for MS anyways.

MS is going to want to include OEM sales in any reports because that's where the volume sales is.

Back when WinXP came out, companies like Dell and HP had a much less marketshare there than currently. Most computers of consumers there that I came across were boutique builders, which didn't install WinXP or installed a pirated OS or both.
Assuming that XP sold more than 120 copies in the first month in China, I bet that the number of genuine, non-oem copies aren't too far from 240.

But this just me opinion, and me not super economic studier.

What with piracy being what it is in China, I'm surprised they sold 244 copies.

I agree. MS will include OEM sales without a doubt. It is probably the only big numbers they have.

Of course if people weren;t using pirated windows they would need Linux which would increase Linu share in the market and could force developers to support itmuch more without all those emulators.

I wonder if Microsoft's spin doctors ever just get dizzy and fall down?

"We did not sell 244 copies, those numbers are false."

Translation - "We sold 245 copies."
