Microsoft announced today that it will launch a Starter edition of the Windows Vista operating system, geared toward customers in developing countries.

Called Windows Vista Starter, it is similar in concept to the Windows XP Starter Edition that Microsoft announced in June 2003: a version of the operating system that can run on lower-end processors, in numerous languages, with extra tutorials bundled for customers who may be using PCs for the first time.

I don't know why we don't get starter here... a cheap alternative just to get a box running :)

Heck, would probably be great for kid's pc's

Does Starter come with DX10? All I want to use Vista for is DX10 gaming and will dual boot or have a second general use PC.

I wish windows would come out with a ...well, blank slate. Have a marble style white background and you get to choose all the programs you wish to have. Just DX10, usb 2.0 and upgradeable to a "real" os at any time. No flash. Just a OS. Windows 95 style in 2007.

It's for developing nations dude...

Anyway, I think this is awesome of Microsoft. I just wish Gates had supported that cheap laptop project that was going on...

Support DX10? Ha.

Starter supports only 3 apps running at once, no incomming network connections, max of 256 ram, etc. Pretty wattered down.

Also want to say it doesn't support user passwords or fast user switching. Areo is not supported either.

Also if it is like xp starter it will only support up to xga res on the monitors.

Pretty much it is a small step above windows ce. :D

The WTO forced Microsoft to make this STARTER version of Vista. Again socialism at it's best, take from people you have to give to people who have not.

WAY TO GO UN!!!

On the other hand you could see it as dumping. - selling goods below cost

Sending useless goods to the third world doesn't help anyone. It just puts people out of work.

Yeah I'm going to agree that this doesn't help developing nations that much. But then again, what does?
