Vista SP2 - Multiprocessor configuration not supported

I upgraded my CPU from Core 2 to Quad running on Vista SP1... Everything was running fine and dandy... Until SP2 was released...

When I upgraded to SP2, after the computer Reboot I got the BSD saying "Multiprocessor configuration not supported" :rolleyes:

I cant get my system to boot now (Safe Mode, Normal) Have tried everything... So i thought of doing a REPAIR, and Even booting from my Vista Disk it gives the same error.:mad:

Can anyone help? What are my options? :confused:
 
Have you tried disabling all but one core and seeing if the system will boot?
 
OK, i put my HDD on another computer and did a backup of all my data...Then Formatted the HDD, put it back in the system, Cleared the BIOS and Reflashed it to the latest release...

Put my Vista x64 SP1 disc and i get the same MF error "Multiprocessor Configuration not Supported"

WTF is wrong? I have tried trouble shooting everything BUT no luck:mad:

How can i do that? I have a P5W DH delxue MD with AMIBOS. I looked for options but must have missed it somewhere...
 
are you using a cpu that your motherboard supports?

YES it was working fine untill I upgraded to VISTA SP2... After that everything messed up...

well the fact that it did work does not always mean that it was supposed to work. I think that is a intel 975 board and many of those do not properly support new quads, that is why I was asking.

anyway that boartd does not exactly have stellar support for 45nm CPUs, but it looks like it should work:

Due to chipset limitation, i975X chipset is not able to support all the features of 45nm CPU. The following is a list of the limitations:
1. VT function does not work.
2. The maximum FSB is capped at 1066MHz.
3. 0.5 CPU multiplier is not supported.
4. L2 cache size is not recognized correctly. However L2 cache is still functioning.

While you are booting from your Vista disk, the behavior of the computer is not affected by what OS (SP1 or SP2) you have on the disk.
Can you confirm that is what you are saying?
If you disconnect your hard drive and boot to your Vista DVD, will it give you the same error?

I got my info off the Asus US support page. It lists 45nm chip support as 'optional' for your board and the list I posted is from the faq. Looks like you copied info from the same page.

Sounds like an ACPI issue.

Make sure you dont' have ACPI 2.0 checked on in your BIOS or something.
 
Do you still get the error if you put the dual core back in the board?
 
I am having the same issue with my Q9550 and Abit IX38 quadgt motherboard. I am told it is because the motherboard doesn't support my cpu, even though I have latest bios. But abit mobo division is dead so I have no recourse, unless you all have some tricks up your sleeves???
 
Have you tried hitting F10 as its booting up and then adding "/NUMPROCS=1" ?

Try BIOS 2901 as it seems to fix the issue with the Asus P5W DH Deluxe board:

Oops.. didn't realize this was a semi-old thread. Apparently Microsoft is working on a hotfix for the Abit users. See this thread and you can get a test patch from a guy at Microsoft:

I missed this thread the first time around. If the new BIOS doesn't work........

The correct hal should be installed considering you already had a dual core processor installed, so the jump to 4 core shouldn't be an issue. Maybe something got corrupted when upgrading to SP2.

Anyway, don't know if you tried this but go into msconfig>boot>advanced options>check detect HAL, uncheck number of processors box, click ok reboot, Vista may install a new hal file/driver on reboot, so look out for that because it would be good news in your case. After rebooting, go back into msconfig>boot>advanced options, uncheck detect HAL, check number of processors box and use the pulldown menu and see if it has 4 listed now. If it does select 4 and hit ok, reboot again. If it doesn't list 4 then, well, I tried.

By the way, this works if you're upgrading from a single core to a dual core processor and already have Vista installed and you don't feel like reinstalling it.

edit: I read this thread really quickly the first time, I missed the fact that the OP couldn't get into Vista, and get's the same error when booting from the Vista disk. Oh well.
