Just wondering which is better to use for ReadyBoost, a compact flash drive or a usb drive? There are various speeds for each product so just think of the fastest a normal user can buy.

Thanks.

Right now I'm just using a 2gb CF.

I recall seeing a new CF device/drive earlier today on some tech site that claimed it was 266x the speed of normal CF devices of the past, soooo...

Personally I'd go with USB sticks since they're pretty damned cheap. The pricing on that CF device I just mentioned (2GB size) was like $80 - I can get 2GB USB sticks at Fry's for $15 till my ear's bleed.

CF still has it's uses but I think USB sticks are the best solution for ReadyBoost duties. OCZ apparently has one that either emulates or simulates "dual channel" style memory and has claims of some pretty fast read/write speeds, but I have no proof or benchmarks to back those reports up.

And you can get 2GB of real RAM for under $100, so no point in using ReadyBoost at all. Just buy more RAM.

I think CF is probably faster but in the real world you won't notice any real difference. More RAM is always good if your gonna be spending money but readyboost is different to superfetch. From what I understand superfetch will preload apps into RAM for use, whereas readyboost will load some of your pagefile onto flash to speed it up.

I also read somewhere that readyboost is pretty much made redundant if your hard disk scores higher than 5 in windows.

Also, if your using readyboost remember and use it on a USB port off your motherboard and not through a hub.

Someone correct me if any of this is innacurate

Although opinions vary- some pretty heavy testing by some big-name companies (magazines and such- I don't remember names) show ReadyBoost gives you little performance increase at all. Hardley even worth it.

Where it DOES give you a boost is in the pricier drives, but for the price you will be paying for one of them you can buy real RAM, which is SIGNIFICANTLY better than ReadyBoost any day.

Which IMO pretty much makes ReadyBoost worthless ;)

i got a 2GB OCZ 15m/s write 20m/s read for $34 a few months ago, not sure how big of a boost it got!

I haven't seen anyone actually extolling the virtues of ReadyBoost as really making a difference. I like Down8's suggestion, if it's valid for your system. I just upped my RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB for about the cost of a 2 GB flash drive.

ReadyBoost works with SuperFetch, typically caching things that you access often (including the system boot). I am currently using a 2GB flash drive for ReadyBoost with my 4 GB of RAM, cheap enough that I saw no reason not to toss it in there. I have seen reviews showing graphs of games and such to indicate no performance gain...there won't be any in that case. It will, however, make your boot time faster and will make applications load quicker that you either use a lot or have just recently used in that session (from faster access time and decent random read speeds).

I see it more as a bonus than a great feature, although it can be helpful on systems with small amounts of memory. More RAM is far superior, but if you're looking into a ReadyBoost device, you should be looking at the read speed in MB/s for optimal usage.

As you can see guys, I've maxed out my ram for this computer. And I have several 2gb CF and 2gb usb sticks lying around. So instead of them being just there, I'll just use one for readyboost. I know the gains are minimal but hey at least it has a use for something when not doing photoshoots.

Basically the faster the better, just a reminder readyboots is not meant to replace memory but to supplement it. With you already having 4GB of memory you will not see much from it, but it will not hurt ether. For sure use something that you might have stitting around even though it might be a small boost it's something.

What I got from readyboost is some things seem a tad smoother on the desktop, but nother to make you go OMG.

Just to toss something in, what's the fastest 4gb flash memory right now? 4gb isn't enough for me I might upgrade to a 64bit system and move from 4gb to 8gb. I don't like waiting when rendering stuff.

Those two are the fastest I've seen yet.

Transcend 4GB Compact Flash (CF) VS PNY OPTIMA PRO UDMA 4GB Compact Flash (CF)

Both have 266X 40MB/sec(Max).

What say you?

I do get some sort of boost from ReadyBoost specially when multple applications like Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Maxon Cinema 4D et. al.

The benefit is Disk I/O happens in parallel to CPU usage (well at least in linux it does). THUS if Windows can pull from two mass-storage devices infomation that is needed for booting it will in theory improve bootspeed if it wasn't used
