Vista Question

What problems are you running into? No, you don't need XP to install that version of Vista.

As is the usual situation, the local computer shop is staffed by idiots. The post above is correct: the release you bought is not an upgrade version so it does not require a previous OS like XP around for proof.

Now that that's settled, you can explain the issues you've had installing it...

It doesn't give me the boot for CD option. I tried it on this computer and it works fine and when I put an XP disc in the other computer it shows up. And the drive I'm using is a DVD drive

So the machine you want to install Vista on isn't booting off the Vista DVD you purchased from Newegg, right? Can that machine boot off other discs, like the XP CD one you mentioned?

Yes it loads the XP disc but then it says that it cant find a hard drive. I have two sata drives in there and they do show up in bios.

And it's not booting at all off that Vista DVD... interesting. Is there another machine you can use for a testing box to see if that Vista DVD will boot? The XP CD can't "see" the SATA drives because it typically doesn't have the SATA controller drivers, they have to be installed using F6 from a floppy or they need to be integrated. You might be able to change the SATA controller from AHCI mode to ATA/IDE mode and then it would see them, but...

If you can't get that Vista DVD to boot it's not going anywhere.

Are you using the ASUS A8N SLI? Is the system in your sig the one you want to install Vista on?

If you DO have an ASUS A8N SLI, try these steps....

Try this. ENSURE your system is set to boot from DVD (please just double check). Also, try to boot from both DVD drives you have, or if not, at least try to borrow one and try that.

Also, go to the BIOS and check the advanced tab and ensure that IDE and SATA channels are all set to Enable.

If this still doesn't work, look at the SATA DMA transfer mode and SATA 2 DMA transfer mode, and IDE DMA , and disable that (if it's set to enable).

Go to Boot and try disabling quick boot

Also, if there is any type of IDE emulation mode or IDE bypass or something that allows your sata to act as an IDE, try that (I don't see anything like that for that board but look just to be sure).

I'm talking about the computer in my sig, the one I am using now is just my other store bought comp

I'm going to try you method now, bigdogchris.

I'm just getting a this error after it goes pass the mobo screen

"disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl Alt Delete to restart"

Are you sure this blank hard drive is in good working order? It's test that out.

Ya most likely, I got it over the summer and haven't touched it since then. Could it be a something with my BIOS?

You should be able to check over your BIOS settings quickly, depending on what type of hard drive it is. I also wouldn't go with a "most likely" answer...I'd want to know for sure.

As usual (and I forgot to mention it myself this time, DOH!!!) in light of possible hard drive issues, first and foremost, always, get the diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer and run both the Quick/Short tests as well as the Advanced/Long/Thorough ones - even if the Quick/Short test is ok, do the Advanced/Long/Thorough one anyway (no surface check, however, that takes way too long).

At least this should tell you if it's a hard drive issue directly... which shouldn't have anything to do with it booting off the Vista DVD, but hey, can't hurt to know everything is working, right?

I don't even know what to think and it almost sounds like you got more problems then one with this PC. First you got a system with a DVD drive that will boot from the XP CD but not the Vista DVD. Sounds like a bad drive or maybe cable. Also be sure to check drive boot order in bios but since it boots the XP CD I am thinking it's drive related. Try the drive that you know works with the Vista disk in your other PC.

Then you got the problem that even when you do boot from the XP disk it finds no hard drive to install too. Again check over the bios and make sure both drives are correctly identified. If they are then run the diagnostic tools from the manufactures web site.
