Am I ever going to get back the constant, stable 99FPS I had with Counter Strike 1.6 When I was with Windows XP?
Currently, I use Vista, and it's annoying to have basically 10 to 50 FPS (playing in Window mode), and overall shakey performance.
And this is with nothing else running. Hell trying to play CS 1.6 with Winamp gives me around 15 fps.

Serioulsy, what in the world is going?
I expected a peroformance loss, but damn, this is too much of a loss.

I been using Vista ever since it came out. I reformatted/reinstalled multiple times..but still, the same problem exists.

So, I need to know, what is the advantages that I am getting by using Vista?

Here's my system specs.
AMD 3000+
AsROck 939 Dual-Sata Motherboard
nVidia GeForce 7600GT
2GB PC3200 RAM
2x 80GB IDE HD's
Sound Blaster 24bit Sound Card.

PS: Please do not be a troll, and just tell me that "Vista Sucks", "Get linux", etc...

All I ask wehther if nVidia will release a driver that will be able to handle CS 1.6 on my GeForce 7600GT and if there is any real advantages in using Vista.
 
Your right it is a big loss. Your hardware is kinda old. I would've sticked with XP.
 
The jump to Vista would not decrease your framerates like that. I did not experience any fps decrease in CS:S when I moved from XP to Vista.

My buddy has a similar setup to yours, same motherboard, better CPU, same amount of memory, except his video card is the Ati X1950XT 512 MB card. He did not experience any performance hit when upgrading to Vista either.

It sounds like the motherboard/chipset drivers need to be updated. When I installed WinXP for the first time and ran some benchmarks they were terrible, updated the mobo drivers, and all was well.

The advantages of Vista are many, however the greatest for me is stability, the ability to address my 8 GB of RAM, and run multiple servers on my machine, while gaming at the same time. Your hardware really isn't able to utilize Vista to its fullest potential.
 
Well, Regarding stability. Honestly, XP never crashed on me, and neither did Vista.
So, their both Stable.

Regarding RAM, XP 64bit, can address 8GB of ram too, any 64bit OS can.
If I want to run servers, then I would just use my Windows 2003 box /=

Also, I checked AsRock's website.
No Updates for Vista.
 
I'd suspect a driver issue somewhere. At this point in time, for single cards, neither ATI or Nvidia is more than 1-2% slower than the same XP machine when running under Vista. You've already tried uninstalling your video driver set completely and then reinstalling a fresh set from the Nvidia site?

As for Vista, it'll benefit you for things like quicker software loading but games won't run any quicker.
 
Make sure CS 1.6 is set to run in OpenGL. Other than that and a driver issue im not sure why the game would run so terrible on your rig. i just fired it up on mine and it runs like butter.
