I am having an issue logging into my NAS drive for some
reason Vista keeps putting the computer name in front of
the user name like:

Computername/Username

This is in turn rejecting my logging into my nas. It does
not happen with my imac mapped drives. I have tryed the
logon using a different username and it just wont work

Nope that does not work either....I need it to be just a username with computer name in front of it but Vista defualts it to putting a computer name in front.

You could try clarifying your statements instead of just bumping the thread. This statement I quoted from you makes no sense. How about giving an example of what it should be, and what is is doing? You also didn't bother telling us what model NAS it is, and if it is compatible with Vista or not.

I agree with DeaconFrost that more information is always helpful when asking for assistance. Always do as much triage as you can and include it because it will often cut down on frustration for you and those trying to help.

Your problem here (Vista adding the computer name prefix) is because Vista uses NTLMv2 for SMB out of the box, and some devices like SOHO NAS have trouble negotiating this authentication protocol. One way to fix this is to edit your LAN Manger authentication settings in your Local Security policy.

The quickest way to do this is:

1. Run secpol.msc
2. Expand Local Policies
3. Expand Security Options
4. Find Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level
5. Change "Send NTLMv2 Response Only" to "Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 if negotiated"

That should fix your problem. If you don't understand why this fixes it, please read up on it. Whenever making important system changes, like altering the default security policy settings, it's always beneficial to understand what you changed and why and how it works rather than taking what people recommend to you at face value.

You could also create a batch file (.bat) containing the following command and set the batch file to run on logon (place a shortcut in your Startup folder). This is what I do.

net use <drive letter>: <network location> <password> /USER:<user> /persistent:yes

<network location> - the network location you want mapped [e.g., \\Home\Docs\]
<drive> - the drive you want the network location to map to [e.g., Z:]

Good luck.

This might seem silly, but after it put the computer name in front of your username, have you tried deleting it and pressing enter again ;/?
