so ive installed the new 7.1 catalyst drivers and when I try to play games, I get BSODs, some times my screen is fuzzy like huge pixel lines, basically: something is wrong, ive tried uninstalling the drivers with driver cleaner 3.3 and than reinstalling them, nothing, zip nada.
the two games ive tried so far are FEAR and AoE III

I think im having the same problem as this guy

You need to start by monitoring the temps on this card. I use ATI Tool or RivaTuner for this but I'm not sure if either of these tools will work in Vista.

With the default GPU voltage on the Sapphire card and with the OEM cooler temps went over 100C before a hard crash. I definitely recommend the Zalman VF-900CU to give you a chance and if you can get ATI Tool working then use it to set VGPU down to about 1.25 volts. It's the difference between a great budget card and a useless piece of junk.

If Sapphire gets enough of these cards returned to them maybe they'll write a new bios update for it and drop the VGPU.

Good luck.

Its not temp related, temps are in the 50's when this happens to me. Its when the card makes the change from 2d speed to 3d speeds that it becomes an issue. HOWEVER in XP (both 32 and 64 bit versions), this is not an issue. Changing from 2d to 3d clocks or even overclocking the card works fine, also playing games for hours works great. Its just in Vista.

sexual chocolate (**snicker***snicker***) got it right on, the temps are always around the 45s, its just that when I attempt to open a 3d app it happens
really hope ati releases new drivers that fix this problem, anybody know when ati will release new drivers?

hey sexual chocolate, can you play games without drivers? I mean thats sacrificing a few FPS, but at least you get to play games, let me know if that works because im on XP atm (uninstaller vista)

If you're having troubles when it switches from 2D to 3D then maybe you could use ATI Tool to lock the card at 3D speeds of 621 / 900 in both 2D and 3D. That creates a little more heat but that's not a problem in 2D.

Maybe when Vista sees two different clock speeds it thinks that you're violating your user agreement and is calling Mr. Gates to see if this is allowed.

Upgrading to XP was a no brainer since what came before it was junk but upgrading from XP to Vista so my computer can have more issues and can run slower in the games that do work doesn't sound like something I'll be doing for a while.

I also uninstalled Vista so i cant check to see if I can run w/o drivers or if locking the speeds helps. I tried to use ATITool in Vista a few weeks ago and it wouldnt run because it didnt have a signature (64bit Vista)

well I have the 32 bit, why do you have the 64 bit one, what are the benifits?
also, I reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally hope ATi/Microsoft fixes this problem

I don't have the BSODs but I did notice the blurriness you were talking about. It's gone now so i'm not entirely sure what fixed it but things seem just fine now using the latest official 7.1 drivers.

The problem seemed to be related to it forgetting what the screen res was whenever it changed modes. It'd drop my widescreen LCD to 1024x768 or something when I'd do something in 3D. After going into the control panel a couple times and moving the resolution back it seems to be just fine.

It could very well be that a certain value wasn't properly getting set somewhere so it gets messed up during state changes. It might also be a refresh rate related problem so make sure you've got the appropriate monitor drivers installed as well.

when did the latest 7.1 catalyst drivers come out? today? yesterday?
also, a lot of my friends who have different ati cards (not x1950xts), they experience no problems

atm im checking out

I think they showed up on the ATI site on the 30th. There were 7.1 betas that were just drivers and then Catalyst 7.1 which contained the works. Including that weird install manager that seems kind of nice.

I'm using a 1900xt and only really remember that problem from right after I finished the Vista install and installed what might have been the beta drivers. It didn't consistently do it but would just change my screen res out of nowhere which obviously stretched the crap out of all the pixels. Hence looking really blurry and blocky.

After getting those drivers on there I honestly can't say I've had any problems at all. Performance in games seems on par with what it was in XP and I haven't had any other weird issues. I'm still in the process of testing stuff but things seem to be working very well.

for now, should I put vista as dual boot and see if the games work? and if they DO work, can I delete the XP partion and will vista have everything (get the space XP was taking up)?
also, I installed vista about 2 days ago so I guess that mightve been the problem
ill try it again later

so lets get this straight: if I am interpreting correctly, this means that the drivers I used 2 days ago were beta and now I should have no problems with it
is that correct?

They very possibly could have been. I got my copy and installed it on the 29th and I'm fairly sure I was using the beta drivers at that time. The next day I found the official drivers and installed those. No guarantees that will fix the problem but my system has been perfectly fine short of really slow HD speeds despite scoring a 5.

well until get get the heads up okay, im not going to install the drivers nor vista
