I tried to install Vista 64 on my machine, and it was taking (literally) ten minutes between each step. I don't think the hardware is at fault (it passes Memtest for 24 hours, and other OSes install fine: I installed Debian-amd64 in 40 minutes including download time), and I've tried two different disks. I finally gave up after an hour and a half. I tried turning ACPI off in case that made a difference, but after twenty minutes and two button-clicks I gave up on that.

Hardware: C2Q 6600, 6GB ram, WD Raptor, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L.

If anything else would help you diagnose this, please let me know.

Drop your config down to 2 GB of memory during the install, or use a disc with SP1 incorporated already.

Really? Is this a known issue? I didn't see anything about it in Google when I researched this issue. Do you know what the limitation comes from?

Some chipsets, mostly Nvidia ones, have had issues when installing Vista x64 with 4 GB or more of memory installed. It's been a known issue for a while, and has had the hot fix for it included SP1. It takes 10 seconds to do, so there's no harm in trying it out, atleast.
