Vista Folder Icons

Hey all,

I'm making icons out of pictures to replace the stock folder icon in Vista. All of them are at a resolution of 256x256 and CS4 wont allow me to save one in a high resolution in .ICO format.

I've noticed that when I view folders in medium the icons fit fine but when I view them in large or extra large they show with a bunch of empty space like some of the other windows icons do. It seems to only be an problem with certain Vista icons, not all. Is there a way to fix this so that the icon fills the entire box no matter how large your view is?

Here's an example of the folder in Large View

How many icons do you have within your .ico file? Generally, you'll want a 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 96x96, 128x128, and 256x256 ( I think that's the largest size) to scale fully, Vista won't do stretching to your icons. Instead, it takes the next largest size and scales it down.

No, Windows does not accept PNGs as icons, it only supports the .ico format.

The thing is even some Windows icons show at full size even in Extra Large view. I dont understand why others wont, especially seeing as they are all the same file type (.ICO). If they indeed werent able to show bigger than 256x256 than none of the icons would fill the box in extra large view.
