In Vista Ultimate if I have a single spanned volume (dynamic disk) covering 4 drives (2x500, 2x400 all SATA) and I want to move them to a XP Pro or Server 2003 machine can it be done without loosing data? What about to another controller? Currently all drives are hooked up to my Gigabyte 965 DS3's SATA ports.

I am not really concerned about data loss from a drive failure as I have everything backed up that I can't replace. I just don't know if I am going to like Vista MCE on my HTPC.

i think only vista ultimate and business support dynamic volumes. I know it's pita to move dynamic volumes from 1 machine to another but it's doable.

Thanks, I have Vista Ultimate so I am good there. Can you expand on the reason why it is a PITA to move it to another machine? These will not be a boot/os drive.

technically it's not simple plug & play, after you move the dynamic volume to another computer it won't just show up in explorer. You have to go to disk management and import foreign volume. I haven't dealth with dynamic volume in a long while but I recall there would sometimes be issues where the new computer refused to import the volume and stuff.
