Hi Im trying to move my system from old harddrive to a new one. Im using AHCI mode on both of them. The system partition(C:) on the old drive is 40GB and the new system partition is 55GB. I made an image by Ghost and then restored the image to the new harddrive but it always fail at 75-80%. (also when i booted into vista from the old drive, the 55GB partion always shown as 40GB, so I guess I cant restore an image if the partition size is different?) Then I tried partition to partition clone with Ghost under DOS but after all the files are copied I cant boot from the new drive. Is there any other way to move my system to the new harddrive without re-install vista? Any help will be much appreciated :)
 
I'm not sure about Ghost, but TrueImage allows you to make a drive to drive copy. I don't think you want to make and restore an image because that locks in the partition size - you need to do a drive copy instead.
 
Ghost should work fine as well, but I think the problem is that you partitioned the destination drive. You always want to try using a blank, unformatted drive as the destination. Ghost will allow you to set partition sizes right before you begin the cloning process. I prefer using Ghost that's run from a BartPE disc, but DOS should still work.
 
Thanks, now I know why it errorrd when I tried to restore an image. But the ghost partition copy didnt work as well :( I'll give TrueImage a try :)

Thank you, I didnt know that Ghost can do that, will try if the other options didnt work out. Just want to confirm, I should leave the harddrive unpartitioned/formated, and use ghost partition to partition option then set the partition size?
 
You should use the drive to drive option if you want the bootable information to copy over, but yes, you will be able to set the sizes during the clone process.
