OK, this is my setup

Thermaltake Armor w/ 25cm fan
Q6600
Asus P5K basic P35
2gb OCZ gold 800mhz
250gb 7200rpm WD HDD
8800GTS 320mb
Windows Vista Home Premium
Creative X-fi Xtreme Gamer

In the past week, I've had to reinstall Vista 4 times due to either registry errors, running extremely slow, or simply repeated crashes. What could be the problem? I wouldn't think vista would be this unstable, there is just no reason for it. What would your advice be everybody?
 
What registry errors are you having problems with?

No offense intended here at all.. but it has got to be something that you are doing that is causing most of your problems. Installing software incorrectly, using non-signed drivers, something.... I don't use any Creative hardware, but I know there have been issues with their drivers... most of which have simply led to their hardware not working correctly, but perhaps that may be one source of your problems...

I don't see anything wrong with your hardware, other than the slight possibility of your sound card... It's got to be software/driver related.

I barely even get anything installed before the crash, but the only things i've put on are the creative vista drivers, battlefield 2142, and AIM. The registry error I didn't record, and used the vista disc to do a startup fix, but from there it slowed the computer to a snails pace and i reinstalled vista again. Any of those programs above conflicting?

All the drivers I am using directly from vista for all the other components. What should I do about the sound card if that is causing the problem?
 
I really don't know if your card is a problem or not.. I had a Live! series card, and Creative has dumped that series in the "end of service life product" category, so I pulled it and chucked it in the trash. Yay for on-board sound;)

I don't use AIM, but I'm 99% sure that it isn't part of the problem, and 2142 works under Vista just fine.

As far as the soundcard is concerned, just make sure that the drivers your using are signed and they should be fine.

Is this a new build your installing on, or has run stable with a different OS?
 
This is a new build, so I haven't had another OS on it in the past. Which is what makes me question the stability of hardware and if that could be the cause.
 
If the registry error re-occurs, writhe down what it is, and next time it crashes post the stop error. That will help point us in the right direction.

I think it's pretty obvious it's a hardware problem... the first thing I would recommend would be to test your memory. Run memtest on each stick individually overnight and see what it comes back with.
 
You hit it right on the head. I restarted after the new vista installation and was getting a blue screen error so I decided to try booting 1 stick at a time. First time it blue screened, after switching the sticks, it booted :) I'm still going to run ORTHOS for 24 hours and just make sure this stick is stable. This *should* fix the issues I think. hahah, quite appreciated. I must say I have thus far enjoyed microsoft products, but they certainly do throw out a stinker here and there haha
 
I don't normally do this kind of stuff either... but....

If eye candy under *nix is what your after... don't bother with Beryl.. it's not really supported anymore and has basically merged with Compiz to become Compiz Fusion..

Compiz Fusion does a lot that Vista doesn't...really more than one could show in a single post...



But see, the thing is the OP was asking for help with Vista, not which OS he should use instead of Vista... and we worked through it and it sounds as if it's sorted out at this point...

As you can see, I am a big *nix fan.. a newbie but a fan, and I use it as my primary OS.. I have Vista, and I like it as well... it's just a matter of taste and personal preference, that's all....

I can't deny that Linux intrigues me, however the key is DX10 for me and that's my reason for upgrading to vista in general.

Also, just another quirk as long as your visiting :)

I am in vista, and just while it's stress testing i tried to change my screensaver and for all besides the stock one, it's telling me "your video card does not support direct3D so it cannot display this" I assume this must be wrong as I have the newest gen card available....

Nevermind, I think it's because I don't have video drivers installed currently.
 
Spoke too soon....The other stick BSOD'd upon restart. I've tried different slots and sometimes some of them work, sometimes they don't. There is no pattern. I'm going to run memtest over night and still seek that out, but I'm not sure what the issue is now.
 
Not sure if anybody is paying attention anymore...but

Ran over night, no errors found. Bleh I need help!
 
Ok, the only things I can think of right now would be a bad mobo, or perhaps you should try re-seating your cpu and hsf....but if you ran through memtest overnight and had no errors, I have to think your mobo may be the culprit...
 
by the way, this rig was made by AVA, so I can always turn to them for warranty help as well. I'm going to attempt to install the newest chipset and GPU drivers and if that doesn't work, then I'll hope AVA will find a solution (such as a motherboard replacement)
 
Just call AVA... from what I understand their customer service is really good.. I'm sure they will help...

Digital Exhaust, you have the best sigs!!! Also what cpu and gpu are you running in those compiz shots. I got to get you to help me with getting something that nice looking on my linux install. I have tried for days in install nvidia drivers, but I am starting to wonder if ubuntu does not play well with nvidia's 8 series drivers

Here's the funny thing about that.... It's a P4 2g 512m ram and an ATI Radeon 7000/VE...

It's a beautiful thing man... old hardware and eyecandy that is amazing.. You shouldn't have any problems with the nvidia drivers.. ATI on the other hand... well, it's horrible..

I would very much so appreciate if you found some performance/compat hotfixes. I would find them if you'd direct me to their general location :)

My video drivers are the newest 163.44 drivers

Sound drivers are 2.15.0002


Also, I've been in contact with AVA and so far I can't say I'm very impressed. They took over a week to replace a heatsink damaged in shipment and then somehow let it out of the factory with all of these issues along with my CPU fan constantly maxed at 2800rpm, luckily they sent a fan controller...but still not too impressed about a brand new PC. Anyway, hopefully all this works out
 
Another problem (if you guys have a solution) is that battlefield 2142 from the start seems to not be able to load new maps after joining the server, for example, I join the server, play the round, end of the round it goes to the loading the new map screen and then the vista loading icon comes up and the game closes. :( why must nothing go right
