I installed 4 gb into my new laptop (2 sticks of 2048) however, vista is only reporting 3325gb. I realized that Vista might be saving about 750mb of ram, but don't know if that is the case. So what would you guys suggest I do? Shouldn't window be reporting that I have 4096mb of ram. What should I do to fix this? Or should I leave it alone. Thanks guys

32 bit OS's can only address 4GB RAM!

That includes ROMs that are shadowed (BIOS, NIC, Soundcard), Video RAM, etc.

Of course you want all your peripherals to work first, so they get first dibs on your RAM. Whatever is left can be used by Vista. :)

This is the limitation to all 32 bit OS's that don't use Physical Address Extensions (i.e., Server 2003).

I had the same problem on a new PC I just assembled. I had to flash the BIOS for Vista 64 to see all 4 GB. Before you try doing check your current BIOS and see if it supports memory remapping. There is information on the topic here:

As I said, for me, I had to flash the BIOS of my new motherboard for Vista to see all 4GB under Vista 64, but once I did the memory is showing up fine.
