I finally took the plunge and installed vista 64 SP1. I have some quick observations.

1. To set my correct time I have to select "atlantic, Canada". I live in central standard time. Any suggestions for a fix?

2. Vast improvement over pre-SP 1 vista.Everything looks great.

3. Even though bitdefender says their anti-virus/anti-spyware 11 is compatible to vista 64,
it still behaves weird(cannot open main console). Anyone with a better Anti-V choice?

4. Remarkable! My hp laserjet 1022 printer works! :)

5. Vista 64 runs kinda slow with 3 GBs of ram. Luckily I have 8 GBs of ram arriving soon.

6. Had to find some new ultility software to run in 64 (O&O defrag, bitdefender).

Your BIOS time is off if you have to set an improper offset for your part of the world. Set it properly, then change your timezone to what it should be.

ESET Nod32 is king.

3GB of RAM is not the issue. That's /plenty/ for Vista. It's still "learning" and will actually get faster over time. Give it about 2 weeks. It will say much of your RAM is "in use" but it is available, it is simply caching things you are likely to access soon to make it faster. This is normal and good.

I went ahead and checked my bios clock. It read correctly. When I had XP loaded my clock was correct in both the bios and windows clock. Just found the issue. I had to change the time sync from windows.time to time.nist.gov. Time is now proper in windows and in bios.

Vista honestly runs slow with 3 gigs of ram? I have 2 on my laptop and it runs very well. It flies on my desktop in my sig.

Did you just pick the wrong one? Are you actually GMT 04:00? I am in the midwest, and picked 06:00 Central Time (US & Canada). You can change it from the clock menu.

Another +1 for Nod32. Got it for $10 about a month ago.

Enjoy.

Win 32 XP does seem to be quicker. Poster silent-cirucuit has informed me to wait for a couple of weeks for vista to index itself. I am also seeing what I can do to reduce uneeded processess to speed up everything. Thank you.

It must be running slow. It took about a year to get his impressions posted!

Hey deacon, took you this long to find my thread? Amazing! :) Honestly this is my first time I loaded a 64 bit OS, so have a heart.

I picked Central Time (US & Canada), but at the time it was 2 hours behind the proper time. Later I did find by changing the time sync to "time.nist.gov" allowed the clock to display the time properly. I am looking for another anti-V solution for now. Thank you for the recommendation.

It was just a friendly comment in jest.

I took it as a jest. Just having some fun. :D

Avira? I have heard of Antivir but not Avira. I'll be sure to check it out. I am really starting to get annoyed with Bitdefender. It worked so well in the past but now it is taking more and more effort just to use the blasted thing. Thanks!

They are one in the same. Avira is the company or group that makes AntiVir.
