^^ My sister's computer has that problem. I ran that scan, checked the SFC.txt logs, and it lists a slew of files that "can't be repaired."

I think it's fallout from this: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1394390

^^
That's never been resolved.

Best guess on that problem: Her network adapter is simply too fickle and that windows never updated itself properly after a point because too much data packet loss. I've been told that Windows Update simply won't take or bother if that data packet loss is doing poorly.

Interestingly enough, none of those files shows up in a search on either the machine itself or the Windows Vista disc.

As best determined, her computer has not been hijacked and there's no malware or viruses.

I'm betting I'm looking at a format no matter what unless someone here has a surprise for me.

Heck, she wants to move on to Windows 7 anyways but before we do that I think I know I'm going to have to improve her Internet situation otherwise I think this could just happen again.

All of this goes hand in glove with this: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035297173&postcount=1

Go to an elevated CMD prompt and type in

sfc /scannow

I've done all that.

I ran that scan, came up with some corrupted files according to that scan in the CBS.log files. Called up the SFC.txt results, saw a slew of files listed there that it says "can't be repaired" so I looked for those files on both the machine and the Vista disc and they aren't found anywhere.

It's very strange.

I should have noted this: The symptom that set this all off is for the last week or so when the machine gets turned on it goes into Windows and acts like another, non admin user profile has logged in.

So my sister knows she he has to restart her machine and then everything runs normally from there on out.

There are no guest or temp profiles anywhere. I have things set to view all hidden files and folders as well.
