Alright next week I am finally doing the jump to Vista. I am a Windows XP Pro, power user, been using it since 2001, and used all the server variants etc. Theres quite a bit of tweaking I do on XP, both for performance and aesthetics. Anyhow What are the procedures or whats a good guide to being a power user in Vista 64, as well as Nlite or etc recommendations?. So scary leaving my XP friend after so long.

I am installing from Retail Vista Ultimate 64 bits.

honestly? do the full install, give it a week or two, and reevaluate the situation. once superfetch gets its act together, the auto-defragger gets things under control, and integrated search checks through your hard drive, see how Vista is running for you. if it's not where you want it to be at that point, then see what you can do to improve performance.

Much of the advice surrounding Vista tends to be to leave it to its own devices. Tweak guides that recommend disabling services generally make two sorts of changes:
- Some don't do very much, so there's little loss when they're disabled - but also little gain, because they were never doing much to start off with. You're also risking that something you try to do in the future needs a disabled service but you're not sure what the problem is.
- Some are usually reasonably busy, so disabling them is more noticeable, but then you lose features (and, in the case of Superfetch, the computer might get slower).

So I wouldn't worry about disabling services. Leave the Indexing Service, Superfetch, Readyboost (don't believe anyone saying you're not using it, it speeds up startup too) and automatic defrag on; things might be a little slower at first but once they've optimised the system and done their work then it should be snappier and they won't need to be as active.

I'd also recommend to keep UAC on, as it's a useful security feature and isn't really that annoying in everyday usage. It can be very annoying when first setting up the PC, which is probably why people turn it off, but now days go by without ever seeing a UAC prompt.

I do have a minor tweak for aesthetics, though.. the default window borders in Aero are rather on the chunky side, presumably to show off the glass. You can slim them down, if you like:

The best way to tweak Vista is to use it. Those guideas are almost always filled with tips that sound good, but yield nothing in terms of actual improvements. Install it, use it, and don't worry about "tweak" guides online.

Alright Ill give it a try, just got so used to XP, and you have to tweak the crap out of it hehehe.
