So I got to wondering, where'd my entire 150 GB drive to to with only 20 GB left of space....and I started to poke around, and found that my windows folder is using 50 GB of HD space...

THat's around 19 for System32, another 19 for SysWOW64 and 6 GB for WinSXS. Is this normal? Should my Windows folder be THAT effing big? I have .net 3.5 Beta installed, which will add some, but I didn't think it'd add THAT much...

So is this normal? If not, how can I weed stuff out?

Thanks!

I'm trying to figure out where 150GB minus 50GB Windows directory leaves you with 20GB of free space. That's 80GB unaccounted for.

Nevermind. I doubt the Vista DVD is 50GB or 130GB of compressed files, so you may need to poke around and see what is taking the space. If you upgraded, there will be a windows.old directory taking space. If you had existing apps, they take space. Hibernation file takes space. Restore points take space. Swap file takes space. Check these things and see if any are abnormally huge or can be reduced.

My full Vista64 install, for both c:\windows and the c:\program files* directories, was about 15GB. I have hibernation and system restore both turned off.

That 80 GB goes to programs and other stuff...but that is FAR from the point. The point is...50 GB. I didn't write a video to my directory...so I'm a bit confused. I already looked for abnormally large files (spacemonger is how I looked) and found....nothing. No abnormally large files in my windows dir...nothing. Just all my dirs being MASSIVELY inflated.

I may just copy over the files I really need tonight and wipe Vista, and slowly bring it back up to date, watch to see if anything suddenly causes my folders to balloon (might the .net packages or the DX SDK do it?!)...thoughts?

I've been running vista x64 ultimate since release. Just checking my windows folder.. its 15gb or so in size. Sounds like something is fubar to me.

When i start wondering where all my HDD space is going I run a program called WinDirStat to analyze everything. http://windirstat.info/
It gives you a graphical view of all your files so you can see what is using up space compared to everything else.

Spacemonger is the same thing.....I used to use windirstat, but I find space monger performs better.

Thanks!
