Vista 64 bit OS question

I have a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and I see I can install the 64bit version of the OS, which is something I was thinking of doing. I'd like to take advantage of the extra memory usage (like to upgrade to 8gb)

I have some questions though.

Any known issues with installing and running software? Does the software have to be specifically compiled and built for Vista 64bit?

Anything I should be aware of if I go this route?

Wasn't sure and wanted to ask.

THanks.

Hey look, a new question that hasn't been asked before!

Aside from system utilities, your software should work just fine with Vista x64. However, you should always investigate each of your primary apps to be sure. If there really were issues like this, you would see so many of us using it. As with any new OS choice, do your research and homework first.

Fair enough.

I guess my question arose because of reports stating software was not usable under 64bit.

I'll comb the forums, see what I can find.

Much obliged.

You'll see some people complaiing about software that uses a driver, such a CoreTemp, etc. Usually, the software will be fixed, or there will be plenty of alternatives.

Also, you'll need x64 versions of your system utlities, like AV scanner, defrag, etc. Again, either their updated to work, or you use some of the free alternatives.
