So... I got an Asus P5K Deluxe WIFI, and just tried 2 sound cards. An original Audigy, and an X-Fi.

Onboard sound works, however, I keep blue screening shortly after loggin in to vista with either card. (mostly driver_irql_not_less_or_equal, or with the x-fi the file creative file ha20x2k.sys.) Tried changing pci slots, nata. Tried running with 2GB, nata.

I tried running in safe mode and installing the latest driver for either sound card, it starts to work, but ANY harddrive access causes the mouse to stutter, and the sound to skip.

I'm running raid0, if that makes any diffrence.
Any suggestions?

Cheers.

TRY RESTARTING IN SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING AND UPDATE THE DRIVERS FOR THE SOUND CARD.And update windows itself also

Already tried. Vista is upto date.
Sounds works, but any hard drive access causes major mouse lag and skipping audio.

Onboard sounds works flawlessly. (just sounds like shit though cuz well its onboard)

Is this a Vista 64-bit issue only?

Are you overclocking? Are you not overclocking? Haha sounds silly but I've read around and sometimes it's either overclocking that causes problems or the problems go away with overclocking. I swear to god I've read that somewhere...

wopsang:
No, CPU (Q6600 G0) and RAM (4x1GB Patriot DDR2 800) are both running stock.

Cheers.

Try:

1/ Each stick of memory individually in all the memory slots... so that's 16 tests right there,

2/ Boot on a single hard drive, one that wasn't used in your raid... test that

If your cards worked before and this is happening now it's probably just bad luck...

Also you might need to raise the voltage , if the voltage isnt at the recommand setting for the sticks of ram. Since some ram has a 2.1 voltage req. Also for your sound cards, try setting the PCI Lat to 64 in your bios.

IDE HDD? What DMA mode is it set to? I had this issue today and it was because I installed a second HDD and forgot to enable it in the bios but Vista saw it anyway and was using UDMA mode2. Once i set it up in the bios correctly Vista used UDMA mode5 and the issue went away. I've used Vista64 on P5K w/4GB ram and X-Fi and never had this issue. My HDD's on that PC were SATAII though and the P5K I have is not wifi model.

Thanks for the suggestions guys...

I used driver cleaner to remove all instances of 'Creative', then reinstalled the latest drivers from Creative's website and now everything is just peachy.

Vista 64 + Raid0 + 4GB RAM & now some sweet sound.

:D

Thanks again.
Cheers.

P.S. For the record, RAM set to the default 1.8v, all hard drives SATA2, and 2 DVD-Writers also SATA. (No IDE devices)

Offspring:

I tried to simply use the drivers by manually pointing to them using device manager and although the sound card works, it loses all settings (bass/treble/volume levels etc.) after each reboot.

So I ran the setup and all it installed (extra) was the 'Creative Audio Console'. No other software was installed. The soundcard now works and remembers all settings.

Cheers.

Sounds like an IRQ conflict. Your HD and sound are perhaps using the same IRQ. You usually can manually assign them in the BIOS. During your post screen, it should show, however briefly, which devices are using which IRQ. You can also check inside the resources tab of the properties dialog of the devices as listed in the device manager under xp, not sure where to check for vista.

edit: oh, you already fixed it. well, thats what I get for only skimming before posting.
