I have onboard Realtek HD sound from an evga 680i and I have read over and over how much better an x-fi xtremegamer would be for gaming sound quality.

I also read many horror stories about Vista 64 and X-FI. What is the current situation like? Any better? Worth getting?

It's $50 after $30 MIR here:

Also, my onboard sound has a line-in that I plan on using if I get a xbox360, but I don't see one on the X-FI.

Can the flexijack be used as a line-in?

Yeap, there will be a checkbox in the driver software to determine what the flexijack will be used for I believe the option will be, Line in, Mic, and side channels for 7.1. sorry I cant help you with your Vista64/X-fi quistion.

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit/4GB RAM/X-Fi XM, and currently I'm having no issues. I'm running the v2.13 drivers, which seem to have the fewest issues. I reformatted a week or two ago and at first I had issues, but they gradually went away.

YMMV.

There's only 1 recurring issue that I'm having, on software reboot while browsing and listening to music, everytime I use the scroll on my mouse static will be produced. The only solution I have is to use shutdown or hit the reset button if I need to reboot.

Once in a blue moon on bootup static will blast thru the speakers as they are initialized before the login screen. While it hasn't done that in a month, I can't pinpoint the cause or conditions that produced it and a reboot usually solves it fine.

XP has no such issues, but I'm hesitant to say it's a sound card issue for the first problem, it could be vista as well.
