Vista 32 or 64

I have vista premium 32 right now on my system and am building my own computer soon. I was wondering if i should get the 64 cd from Microsoft for 5 dollars or does it not really make a difference. thanks
 
As more and more of these "32 or 64" posts come up, less and less people start posting to them.
So PLEASE, do us all a favor and use the search function.

The short summary for you (search for details):
Your hardware must support it- this includes drivers.
It maintains 32-bit compatibility (IE, all 32 bit programs will still work).
Not many 64 bit programs out right now- but migrating now makes it easier in the future.
 
Well, if you can get by any driver problems, I'd go with the 64-bit version. It's more stable and secure (atm at least). It is possible some of your older software won't work with 64-bit so I'd check on that before making the jump.
 
Grab the 64-bit disk. Install it alongside your 32-bit install as a dual-boot. (You'll likely need to telephone activate, telling the dude there that you reinstalled)

Then use both for a while, making your own mind up. Some people will get benefit in the way of extra responsiveness and speed, some people won't. It depends upon what you do on your rig and what programs you use to do it.
 
I'd get 32. I installed XP x64 about 3 times, and after a month of each, I kept returning to x86 for various reasons, mostly games/demos not wanting to install on x64, second reason is just general compatibility. And also because x64 has a larger memory footprint (programs and games take more of the memory than on x86), being limited on memory (1gb), I chose to stick to x86 until x64 is as mainstream as dual core processors.
Oh, and it's no different with Vista x64, I tried that once, too, went back to XP.
 
If you are going to have over 3gb of ram go with 64bit vista, if you are plannign on upgrading past 3gb's go wish 64bit vista. if you dont plan to go past 2gb, might as well stay 32 bit vista. I really think people should start investing in 64bit now, just make sure you dont have any majore compatablility problems.

One thing i found funny about 64 bit for windows is that Linux has tons more drivers then it since every driver in 32 bit is in 64 pretty much, since they control the source code. Microsoft should have thought about doing that so upgrades could have gone smoother.

Do YOUR own research as to what drivers are available for YOUR hardware. The check on the compatibility with the software and games YOU use.

I emphasized the words you and your for a reason. It's your decision, based on your environment, needs, and uses. No one else can answer this question for you. Vista64 is every bit as stable as Vista32. The decision lies in what hardware and software you use, which is why you need to make the decision, as opposed to some random people on a form board.
 
Go 64bit. With vista anytime you have a 32bit driver you also have a 64bit one. And 32bit apps will also work on a 64bit OS. There are a few minor exceptions.
